Nicola Kountoupes/University Photography By David Brand Jupiter's intricate, swirling ring system is formed by dust kicked up as interplanetary meteoroids smash into the giant planet's four, small inner moons, according to scientists, three of them from Cornell, studying data from NASA's Galileo spacecraft. Images sent by Galileo also reveal that the outermost ring is actually two rings, one embedded within the other. The findings were announced Tuesday by scientists from Cornell and the National Optical Astronomy Observatories (NOAO), Tucson, Ariz., at a press conference held in Cornell's Ives Classroom Building. The briefing, held in conjunction with NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), was seen live by media at JPL in Pasadena, Calif., over a PicTel videoconference link and was made available to media and researchers around the world by live video streaming on the World Wide Web. "We now know the source of Jupiter's ring system and how it works," said Joseph Burns, professor of astronomy and the Irving Porter Church Professor of Engineering, who reported on the first intimate analysis of a planet's ring system, along with research associate Maureen Ockert-Bell, Joseph Veverka, professor of astronomy and planetary sciences, and Michael Belton of NOAO.

October 16, 2000 Carillonneur Rings the Changes on Traditional English Pastime tanding at the carillon in Storrs Congregational Church high above the UConn campus, David Maker looks more like a dedicated musician than a maverick. But as he discusses his favorite instrument and his successful and controversial attempt to adapt the English pastime of change ringing to it, it becomes apparent that he's both. "My special crusade is to make this a social instrument, because it's lonely up here," says Maker, an associate professor of music and associate department head, as he surveys the windowless room that houses the University Carillon's keyboard. It is tucked under the church's steeple and is accessible only by climbing two steep ladders. Of the thousands of people who "ring changes" in England and the handful who do it in the United States, Maker is the first one to try the sport on a carillon, which operates bells through a series of connector rods. Updating the centuries-old pursuit for the new millennium hasn't exactly made traditionalists happy. "When I try to talk about this, it's heresy," Maker says. "They won't discuss it."

INTO THE RING'S EVIL: STUNTS AND ACTION "This film required actors in tremendous physical shape, both because of the battles they go through and the fact that the Fellowship journeys over water, under the ground and across mountains to destroy The Ring." The soaring action of The Lord of The Rings also required the design of unparalleled stunts under the direction of stunt coordinator George Marshall Ruge. They not only helped to choreograph massive battle sequences filled with ancient (and newly invented) fighting techniques, but worked with cast members and stunt extras balancing on high cliffs, scaling castle walls, falling out of boats and charging through forests on horseback. The stunts for this film are very unique because there are so many characters who fight differently. It was a challenge for the stunt department to stage battles with so many different sizes, styles and movements. Bob Anderson, the world's top sword master who has consulted on such films as Star Wars and trained the legendary Errol Flynn, was also brought in to train the actors in different fencing techniques. An expert in medieval arms, Anderson read the novel and then developed sparring methods based on Tolkien's descriptions of each culture. For example, he determined that the hobbits are so small, they should fight as a team. Some, like the axe-wielding Gimli the dwarf, use other kinds of weapons. A commando army of stunt performers was given special training to perfect the unique fighting styles of the Orcs, the Uruk-Hai, The Ringwraiths, the Elves and the other civilizations in Tolkien's universe. An expert in firing ancient English longbows was also brought in.
