Astrophysics Specialization
Advisor: Steve Ruden spruden@uci.edu
The astrophysics track prepares students for careers in astronomy and astrophysics research. With a bachelor's degree, a person can get an entry-level research position in, for example, an aerospace company or satellite manufacturer, national laboratory or observatory, or work in public education, for example, at a museum or science center. Other students choose to proceed on to graduate school to learn advanced subjects and research techniques that greatly increases their job skills. Where do professional astrophysicists work? In the US, roughly 60% are in academia where they teach and do research, 30% work in government research labs or observatories, 10% in business and private industry. For more information about careers in astrophysics, see "A New Universe to Explore: Careers in Astronomy" , from the American Astronomical Society.
Courses:
Cosmology (137), Stellar Astrophysics (144), High-Energy Astrophysics (145), and any two of Nuclear Physics (132), Optics (134), Plasma Physics (135) or Particle Physics (136). Other electives may be substituted with permission from the track advisor. Recent Graduates: Feel free to contact some of our recent graduates listed below. They'll be happy to answer any questions you might have.
