Introduction
Following an agreement with the Editors of , the CDS provides access to the abstracts from the Astronomy and Astrophysics main Journal, and Supplement Series From 1st January 2001, the Main Journal is published by EDP Sciences, who has published the Supplement Series since 1980. From 1st January 2001, the Supplement Series is merged with the Main Journal. These abstracts are made available to CDS by the Publisher ( EDP Sciences ) at the time of publication of the electronic issue of the journal. Springer-Verlag and EDP Sciences

Observational Astrophysics:
Assoc. Professor Bill Zealey, Mr Glen Moore and Mr Peter Ihnat
The Department undertakes teaching and research in infrared studies of star formation, photometry and spectrometry of variable stars in the Magellanic Clouds and studies of planetary surfaces. A major part of our research involves the development and use of digitising systems in the analysis of UK Schmidt Telescope plates. We regularly observe on major Australian radio and optical telescopes accompanied by our postgraduate.
A computer-controlled 40cm telescope on the roof of the Science Building, which is equipped for photometry and electronic imaging, supports undergraduate and postgraduate research projects.
We also work closely with the Illawarra Science Centre and make use of the Centre's planetarium in our teaching program.
Star Formation:
Stars are born in dense molecular clouds. The youngest stars blast out material in supersonic winds. We are studying the interaction between these winds and the surrounding molecular cloud at radio, millimetre and infrared wavelengths in an attempt to better understand the early stages of star formation.
Long Period Stars in the Magellanic Clouds: The Magellanic Clouds present a unique opportunity to study complete samples of stars which are believed to be the precursors to planetary nebulae and supernovae. Measurements of these Long Period Variables (LPVs) provide information on the evolutionary behaviour of stars in their late stages. The Department has completed a survey of LPVs in the Small Magellanic Cloud.

PICK OF THE WEEK
(January 2, 1995)
On January 3, 1995, it was agreed that the Astronomy and Astrophysics pages in the WWW Virtual-Library at CERN, which are maintained by Sergio Paoli at La Plata, will be computed from the AstroWeb database, and that links in those pages which are not already in the AstroWeb database will be added to the database. Beginning April 3, the Virtual-Library pages are being computed from the AstroWeb database.
The pages with the old format of the WWW-VL: Astronomy and Astrophysics are still available and continously updated.
AstroWeb:
Astronomy/Astrophysics on the Internet
Welcome to AstroWeb - a collection of pointers to astronomy-related information available on the Internet. The database is maintained by the AstroWeb Consortium , a collaboration involving 9 individuals at 7 institutions. These CERN - La Plata AstroWeb pages are recomputed at about 06:30 UT each day, if the master database has been changed.

About Physics@Sydney Students Research Local ... Links The Institute of Astronomy at the University of Sydney pursues Astrophysical research across a range of theoretical, observational and instrumental programs. Observational data are obtained from various facilities in Australia, overseas and in orbit. The School operates its own radio telescope, the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST) , while the Sydney University Stellar Interferometer (SUSI) is the major element in a broad program of high resolution optical imaging. Observing opportunities are also frequently awarded at the national facilities in Australia - the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT - optical) and the Australia Telescope (AT - radio). Theoretical Astrophysics is concentrated within the Research Centre for Theoretical Astrophysics (RCfTA) Research is conducted in many exciting and interesting areas including stellar astrophysics, plasma astrophysics, cataclysmic variables, black-hole binaries, masers, pulsars, supernovae and their remnants, the interstellar medium and the Galactic centre. Beyond our Galaxy, studies include normal galaxies, the Magellanic Clouds, clusters of galaxies, active galaxies and quasars, gravitational lensing and cosmology.
