46. PRAXIS Publishing Astronomy, Astrophysics & Space Sciences
of such important developments or seen such a wealth of new and exciting, if sometimescontroversial, data as modern astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology.
http://www.praxis-publishing.co.uk/ass.htm
Subject Advisory Editor: John W. Mason B.Sc., Ph.D. Few subjects have been at the centre of such important developments or seen such a wealth of new and exciting, if sometimes controversial, data as modern astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology. These books reflect the very rapid and significant progress being made in current research, as a consequence of new instrumentation and observing techniques, applied right across the electromagnetic spectrum, computer modelling and modern theoretical methods. The crucial links between observation and theory are emphasised, putting into perspective the latest results from the new generations of astronomical detectors, telescopes and space-borne instruments. Complex topics arc logically developed and fully explained and, where mathematics is used, the physical concepts behind the equations are clearly summarised. These books are written principally for professional astronomers, astrophysicists, cosmologists, physicists and space scientists, together with post-graduate and undergraduate students in these fields. Certain books will appeal to pre-university college students, amateur astronomers, and non-scientists with a keen interest in astronomy and astrophysics. Reflecting the development of NASA, ESA and other nations' space exploration programmes, the Space Sciences titles in this programme provide a readable and composite account for the space enthiusiast. Books with new ideas and results of current research in spacecraft exploration are written for the professional and scientific community.

Circumstellar Disks
(Alycia J. Weinberger)
Understanding the properties and evolution of the circumstellar disks that provide the raw materials for planet-building is a key element in furthering our understanding of the formation of planetary systems. An extensive program of observations of thermal radiation from disks (320 micron wavelength) and scattered radiation (visual and near-infrared wavelengths) is carried out using ground based (including Carnegie's Magellan) Telescopes and the Hubble Space Telescope. Imaging and spectroscopy of 1 100 Myr disks surrounding nearby stars elucidate disk geometries, revealdust composition and in an ensemble fashion teach us about the evolution of disks and the timescales for planet formation within them.

    Space Sciences Astronomy/Astrophysics Undergraduate Curriculum
    The Astronomy/Astrophysics Option
The Astronomy/Astrophysics Option was designed for the student who is more interested in astronomy and less interested in the other fields of space sciences. It is a bit more rigorous than the Space Science program, and is designed primarily for students planning to pursue graduate studies in astronomy or astrophysics.
    Degree Requirements
Candidates for a Bachelor of Science in Space Sciences must complete the minimum course requirements outlined in the following curricula. Deviation from the recommended program may be made with the approval of the student's advisor and the concurrence of the department head. Because subject matter of general physics and astronomy form a critically important foundation for all advanced course work in space sciences, the minimum grade for satisfying the prerequisite requirements for a space sciences major is a grade of C for each of the following courses: PHY 1001, PHY 2002, PHY 2003, PHY 2091, PHY 2092; and SPS 1010, SPS 1020. Faculty research interests include star formation in galaxies, active galactic nuclei, ring galaxies, clusters of galaxies, large scale structure of the universe, and variable stars. The department is part of the NASA Nevada Space Grant Consortium, the purpose of which is to develop research and educational opportunities in space science in Nevada. The department is also part of a four-college consortium that operates an automated telescope on Mt. Hopkins, near Tucson, Arizona. UNLV Astronomers successfully compete for observing time on the Hubble Space Telescope and at the various national astronomical facilities, such as Kitt Peak National Observatory. Departmental facilities include a 16-inch computer-operated photometric training telescope mounted on the roof of building and computer workstations dedicated to digital processing of astronomical images. Imagine Home
Ask A High Energy Astronomer Current page
    The Question
I am planning on majoring in Astronomy/Astrophysics. Do you have any information on which institutions are offering the best programs in this field.
    The Answer
Your question is a good one, but it would be easier to answer it if you told us what your long term goals are. This is because, if you are interested in a career in astronomy, you will probably want to attend graduate school after college and get a Ph.D. If so, then the choice of graduate school is more important to your future career than is the choice of college. In fact, many students in graduate schools in astronomy have undergraduate degrees in fields other than astronomy, such as physics or mathematics. My list of the top graduate schools in astronomy includes: Princeton, Caltech, UC Berkeley, and University of Chicago as the top few. For undergraduate astronomy, I think you can get a good education at many colleges or universities. As with many things, what you put into your education can determine what you get out of it. I think that you would find that if you polled the students entering the top graduate schools that they come from a wide range of college backgrounds, including both public and private institutions, liberal arts colleges and large universities. I hope this helps!
