The four programs include STEAM (for the properties of ice, water, and steam), R22 (for refrigerant-22 properties), GAS (for ideal gases CO , CO, O , N , H O, H , air, and CH exergy has been used in preference to availability optimum cycles from ideal cycles. The fact that the Carnot cycle is not the optimum cycle for a real heat power plant that receives heat from combustion gases is demonstrated and explained. Pedagogy Système International d'Unites (SI) and the United States Customary System of units (USCS), but the unit systems are not mixed in a specific problem. Although it is apparent that the United States and all other major indust- rialized countries are moving to SI, the change is not yet complete and it is appropriate for students to develop the capability to deal with both systems.     The interplay of literature and physics that led to acceptance of the theory of relativity. This book follows the interplay between allegory and physics in Europe from the inception of the laws of thermodynamics in the 1850s to the cultural acceptance of the theory of relativity in the 1920s. Bruce Clarke delves into the cultural poetics of this emergence, as well as using allegory theory to link the literature of that era to the consolidation of modern physics in England. In his examination of these correlating topics the author displays not only an impressive grasp on the scientific climate of that era, but also comprehensive knowledge of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century literature. The book begins with an overview of the interconnections between allegory in literature and allegory in science, then analyzes the interaction between energy and entropy and their personification in the literature of the times. Energy Forms draws on the writing of well-known literary and scientific authors including H. G. Wells, Camille Flammarion, Charles Howard Hinton and D. H. Lawrence, among others. The focus then shifts to the broad cultural tension between thermodynamic malaise and electromagnetic aspiration.

    LESSONS FROM CLASSICAL THERMODYNAMICS
    1) Define System as separate from Surroundings.
    2) Identify Change in State that system undergoes (Initial and Final states).
    3) Change in state occurs through a process defined by a pathway. Work (w) and heat (q) exchanged with the surroundings are dependent on the pathway. However, we can in principle find a pathway for which the change in state occurs (through appropriate coupling to the surroundings), in which the maximal amount of work (w max ) is done. Such a pathway defines a reversible process, and the heat exchanged is called the reversible heat (q rev ). A reversible process does not occur at a finite rate.
    FOR A REVERSIBLE PROCESS W max AND Q rev HAVE FIXED VALUES.
    Since we can in principle find a reversible process for any change in state, we can also define the fixed values for maximal work and reversible heat for any change in state.
    The parameters, w max and q rev , which define the reversible process, are of special importance in thermodynamics, because, unlike the work and heat exchanged in an irreversible (or "spontaneous") process, they have unique values for a defined change in state; they are variables of state . Further analysis of the heat exchange led to the concept of entropy.

    In this section, we start from the experimental fact that heat engines are never 100% efficient, and also that there is a natural direction to spontaneous processes (such as the cooling of a cup of coffee), and derive the existence of a new function of state, entropy In classical thermodynamics, entropy ``completes the set'' of relevant thermodynamic variables and, starting with the fundamental thermodynamic relation and using Maxwell's relations , enables us to work out what is happening to systems during a variety of processes. The underlying meaning of entropy however is only clarified when we progress to statistical physics (Some of the early part of this section will be revision, but the overall approach to entropy is new.)
