In conjunction with the course, an online archive of materials were created, which remains online at the Geometry Center.     After you register for the internet section of Math 1314, you will receive a login, password, and syllabus at your initial meeting with the instructor. This will allow you to access the college algebra material on the server. We will discuss course mechanics and in particular, spend some time in dealing with the question of how to communicate mathematical material over the internet. This article outlines some of the problems and how we deal with them at Ranger College. In a regular classroom, math is communicated by grabbing a sheet of paper and writing the appropriate symbols. The instructor generally does this on a blackboard. However, many of the symbols we use frequently in math are not available on the computer keyboard, and so some other method must be employed to communicate electronically. Here are some possibilities: 1. Take the sheet of paper and simply send it by fax! Of course, this technique requires both sender and receiver to have a fax machine available at all times and bypasses the internet altogether. 2. Scan the handwritten sheet, create a graphic file, and attach it to email. The problem here is that the graphic file may be huge, and this would present a bandwidth problem if either party had a slow connection.

    K12 Mathematics Teacher Guide for Linux
    Text Markup Languages and WYSIWYG Editors In Linux, the standard method for composing documents that contain math expressions is to use Tex or Latex. Latex is an extension of Tex that provides capabilities, such as certain kinds of graphics, that Tex does not have. You run the document through Tex or Latex which produces a Device Independent (dvi) file. You can preview the document with xdvi. Then you print the document or convert the document to html, postscript or a variety of other document formats, including HTML. There are many differences between text markup and WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editors and word processors. In text markup languages like HTML, Tex, and Latex, a text editor is used to type special characters for special effects. For instance, to get x squared in Tex or Latex you just type $ x^2 $. In WYSIWYG editors like the equation editor in Star Office, or the experimental browser, Amaya, you click on a form for x squared and then enter the x as the base and the 2 as the superscript. For simple documents containing math, a WYSIWYG editor is appropriate to use. For larger more complex documents Tex or Latex is definitely the preferred software. The reason is that authors have greater control over the layout and appearance of the content with text markup. Also, WYSIWYG editors will tend to generate many more characters for the effect than text markup. For example, here is the quadratic equation in Tex, Latex, and the WYSIWYG editor Amaya, which uses MathML for the markup.

    Progressive Instruction Operational Definition and Measurement To help anchor mathematical concepts for students, teachers need to present mathematics in the “everyday” context and encourage students to work together in groups to solve problems (Resnick, 1987; Romberg and Carpenter, 1986). Student-centered instructional practices with a strong emphasis on higher-order thinking skills can be considered positive signs of the implementation of many recent recommendations for the reform of teaching mathematics (NCTM, 1991). Items from the 1992 and 1996 NAEP teacher survey were used to "measure" progressive instruction (see below). There are four common items that can link the 1992 and 1996 data. According to the NAEP sampling design, teachers were selected if they taught student 8th grade mathematics. Thus, teachers' measures of progressive instruction were matched to their students who participated in the NAEP 8th grade mathematics assessment. Response values to the following survey questions were recoded so that higher values could indicate greater frequency of corresponding practices or greater emphasis on corresponding areas.
