An overview of the CSE.
Abstract
The standard cycle in simulation is to prepare input, execute a simulation, and to visualize the results. However, more insight and a higher productivity can be achieved if these activities are done simultaneously. This is the underlying idea of Computational Steering : researchers change simulation parameters on the fly and immediately receive feedback on the effect. The development of a dedicated user-interface for a simulation is a time-consuming process, which requires the expertise of specialists on user-interfacing and computer graphics. The aim of the Computational Steering project is to develop an environment in which researchers themselves can develop and use interfaces to their simulations.
Background
Scientific Visualization has become a separate research area since 1987, when the influential report of the US National Science Foundation was published. In recent years many new methods, techniques, and packages have been developed. Most of these developments are limited to post-processing of data-sets. Usually the assumption is made that all data is generated first and that next the researcher iterates through the remaining steps of the visualization pipeline (selection, filtering, mapping, and rendering) to achieve insight in the generated data. Hence, the interaction with the simulation is limited. The first step to more interaction is with tracking . After each time-step of the simulation the resulting data for that time-step is sent into the visualization pipeline and can be inspected. If the researcher considers the results invalid, then the simulation can be stopped at an early stage, and restarted with a different set of input parameters. The next step

The Parametric Grid Generation System MegaCads
Introduction
During the last decade, advances in the field of numerical aerodynamics lead the way to very powerful codes capable of handling problems in two and three dimensions [ ]. The solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for a complex configuration, including the wall boundary layers, requires structured grids of high resolution. Even today the creation of such grids of high quality is very costly in time and thus in manpower. On the one hand, the long development times can be the result of using batch generators which usually can handle variations in parameters (like a flap deflection angle) easily, but are tailored to specific topologies which cannot be changed quickly. On the other hand, interactive methods, often integrated into existing CAD systems, are time consuming if modifications in geometry or parameters force the user to do a redesign of large parts of a grid. Over the last years, the DLR Institute of Design Aerodynamics has used commercial products and has developed batch generators for grids around complex transport configurations [ ]. Special interactive tools were developed for the smoothing and refining of algebraic grids [

The 5 th International Conference INFORMATION VISUALISATION LONDON ENGLAND 25 - 26 - 27 July 2001 Call for Paper, Video and Digital Art Work Computer Aided techniques for geometric design are extremely useful tools in a number of industrial settings. Specifically, Computer Aided Geometric Design (CAGD) plays a significant role in the construction of designing and manufacturing of various objects. In addition to its critical importance in the traditional fields of automobile and aircraft manufacturing, shipbuilding, and general product design, more recently, the CAGD methods have also proven to be indispensable in a variety of modern industries, including computer vision, robotics, medical imaging, visualisation, and even media. The purpose of the CAGD symposium within this conference is to focus on interdisciplinary methods and affiliate research done among various disciplines with the goal of stimulating views and providing a forum where researchers and practitioners can discuss the latest developments linked to information visualisation.

Design and Analysis of Deep Foundations N. O. Nawari, R. Liang , and J. Nusairat Department of Civil Engineering, University of Akron, Akron, OH, USA Email the first author ABSTRACT Artificial intelligence paradigms are implemented to simulate the behavior of axially and laterally loaded piles, using data from full-scale drilled shaft and driven pile tests as well as from published data. The main objective is to develop optimal neural network models using only simple input data. These data include SPT-N values and the geometrical properties. Neural network models are developed for steel H-piles, steel pipe piles, and pre-stressed and reinforced concrete piles. The models involved are Backpropagation, and Generalized Regression Neural Networks. Prediction results and comparison with the commonly used design methods are presented. Advantages and limitations of using neural networks in the design of pile foundations have been addressed. Keywords: Artificial intelligence, piles, axial load, lateral load, analysis INTRODUCTION General Presently, there are numerous approaches for the prediction of the axial load-bearing capacity of driven piles as well as for laterally loaded drilled shafts. Most of these methods either oversimplify the nature of the problem or improperly consider the effect of certain governing factors. The problem is extremely complex owing to the large number of uncertain parameters that affect the behaviour of piles. Neural Network approach is one alternative that is capable of incorporating the uncertainties associated with the controlling parameters.

Subject: Polynomials Orthogonal Over an Equilateral Triangle
I wonder if some kind soul would direct me to literature that deals
with polynomials that are ORTHOGONAL on an EQUILATERAL triangle.
The Appell functions are orthogonal over a region covered by a
right angled triangle, but I do not know if these can be modified
to obtain polynomials that would be orthogonal over an equilateral
triangle. Also, any literature that deals with rational functions
orthogonal over an equilateral triangle. I would be very grateful for any and all information on this interesting topic (it affects both finite elements and mechanical CAD).

ESTIMATING VISCOELASTIC CONSTANTS OF TWO-PHASE COMPOSITES, James G. Berryman, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Dept of Computational Physics, Livermore, CA; Graeme W. Milton, Univ of Utah, Dept of Mathematics, Salt Lake City, UT.
Hashin-Shtrikman-type variational pricniples have been formulated in order to obtain rigorous bounds on the shear modulus of two-phase viscoelastic composites. The simplest class of bounding regions is composed of circles in the complex plane containing four points related to the viscoelastic moduli of the constitutents, and depending on a scalar parameter. A method of generating the convex hull of all such bounding regions has been developed. Several examples of bounds computed using the method will be presented, including one for suspensions of solid particles in a viscous fluid. In the important limiting case when all the constituent moduli are real, the new shear bounds are shown to reduce precisely to the well-known Hashin-Shtrikman-Walpole bounds.
