About the Alliance
The National Computational Science Alliance (Alliance) is a nationwide partnership of more than 50 academic, government and business organizations working together to prototype an advanced computational infrastructure for the new century. This infrastructure, called the Grid, is rapidly developing into a ubiquitous, pervasive, national-scale information infrastructure that links supercomputers, virtual environments, scientific instruments, large databases and research teams. Started in 1997, the Alliance is one of two national partnerships funded by the National Science Foundation's Partnerships for Advanced Computational Infrastructure ( PACI ) program and receives cost-sharing at partner institutions. The National Center for Supercomputing Applications ( NCSA ) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign leads the Alliance under the direction of NCSA and Alliance Director Dan Reed.

The Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (CSGF) is a program funded by the Department of Energy, Office of Defense Programs and Office of Science. Computational Science is a vital part of many scientific investigations, affecting researchers and practitioners in the sciences and beyond. Due to the sheer size of many challenges in computational science, the use of supercomputing, parallel processing, and sophisticated algorithms, is inevitable.
The International Conference on Computational Science 2003 (ICCS 2003) aims to bring together researchers and scientists from mathematics and computer science as basic computing disciplines, researchers from various application areas who are pioneering advanced application of computational methods to sciences such as physics, chemistry, life sciences, and engineering, arts and humanitarian fields, along with software developers and vendors, to discuss problems and solutions in the area, to identify new issues, and to shape future directions for research, as well as to help industrial users apply various advanced computational techniques.
ICCS 2003 is the follow-up of the highly successful ICCS 2002 conference held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. ICCS 2003 will be unique, in the sense that it is a single event held at two different sites almost opposite to each other on the globe, that is, in Melbourne, Australia and Saint Petersburg, Russian Federation. The conference will run at the same dates at both locations, and there will be a single set of ICCS 2003 proceedings. You, as participant, as author of a paper, or as organizer of a workshop, decide to which location you go. In this way we hope that researchers from all over the world will be able to participate in the most important event on Computational Science in 2003.

Welcome to Computational Science Highlights
This multimedia collection contains descriptions of some of the 10,000 scientific research projects that have used the resources of National Science Foundation supercomputing centers. The reports range from astronomy to zoology, and include scientific breakthroughs on black holes, how the heart works, pollution control, and modelling the oceans. All reports have images, and many also are accompanied by animations and sound. You can find reports in two ways:
  • By browsing through an entire field of science, such as physics or chemistry, chosen from a list of fields click here or click the BROWSE button on any screen).
  • By searching for a list of relevant reports using keywords for subject, researcher or title ( click here or click the SEARCH button on any screen). Browsing will bring you all the reports in a subject area. Searching will retrieve fewer reports on more specific subjects. The goal of Metacenter Science Highlights is to highlight a few examples of scientific results achieved through institutions that are Metacenter participants.     The mission of the Education Center on Computational Science and Engineering (ECCSE) is to foster the incorporation of high performance research tools for scientific investigation into the undergraduate curriculum. Our main goal is to better prepare learners for post-Baccalaureate activities where collaborative interdisciplinary teams, sophisticated computer tools, and effective communication are part of the research and problem solving environment.
