Computational Science Computational science is different from computer science. The latter is the science of computation (e.g., the invention of efficient search and sort algorithms, techniques of parallel processing, etc.). The former is the use primarily of computation, rather than of theorizing or experimentation, to attain scientific knowledge. Computational science has been made possible by the development of high-speed computers, and is still at an early stage of development.
  • Cellular Automata , software which allows exploration of four cellular automata: (a) A generalization of Conway's Life, called q-state Life
    (b) A simulation of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky chemical reaction in which, beginning from a random state of the system, spirals and curlicues emerge spontaneously.
    (c) A process called Togetherness in which colored cells, starting from a random distribution, rearrange themselves so as to form clusters of cells of the same color.
    (d) A simulation of the population dynamics of dividing cells subject to viral infection, Viral Replication
  • Lattice Geometries , an article about the mathematical and computational representation of lattice geometries as used in computational physics.

Computational science and engineering (CSE) is inherently interdisciplinary, requiring expertise in advanced computing technology as well as in one or more applied disciplines. The purpose of the CSE Option at the University of Illinois is to foster interdisciplinary, computationally oriented research among all fields of science and engineering, and to prepare students to work effectively in such an environment. Students electing the CSE Option become proficient in computing technology, including numerical computation and the practical use of advanced computer architectures, as well as in one or more applied disciplines. Such proficiency is gained, in part, through courses that are specially designed to reduce the usual barriers to interdisciplinary work. Thesis research by CSE students is expected to be computationally oriented and actively advised by faculty members from multiple departments. Please forward questions to William Dick , CSE Managing Director.

The Center for Computational Science (CCS) is an NRL organization within the Information Technology Division. The mission of the CCS is to provide the Navy community with access to state-of-the-art high performance computing and communications (HPCC) capabilities and to provide production computational services. The Center services NRL, the Office of Naval Research, and other clients within the DoD. It participates as a partner in the DoD's High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) and in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) sponsored National Consortium (NCHPC) as well as interacting with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) meta-center sites nationwide. Most importantly, the CCS provides support to researchers nationwide to solve real world problems by maintaining a balanced focus on service, research, and development.
Research interests are concentrated in providing early access to scalable massively parallel computing systems, high performance networking technologies, and scalable software compilers and tools to support applications development. Toward these ends, the Center is involved in rapid prototyping for the Information Age through the development of a nationwide file system and the evolution of a transparent, user friendly information infrastructure that supports a rich, multimedia environment. This vision supports voice, video, data, and imagery from the application to the end user.

The Shodor Education Foundation announces the creation of The National Computational Science Institute (NCSI). NCSI expands the already popular regional workshops known as the Shodor Computational Science Institute (SCSI). At over 18 partner sites across the country, NCSI introduces the hands-on use of computational science, numerical models, and data visualization tools across the curriculum. The National Science Foundation has awarded a three-year, $2.75M grant (Award Number: DUE-0127488) enabling NCSI to offer a national set of in-person, video-conferenced, and web-accessible workshops, seminars, and support activities. The initial target audience for NCSI are teams of faculty from predominantly undergraduate institutions (PUI's), minority serving institutions (MSI's), and community colleges whose students are either the next generation of scientists and engineers, the next generation of K-12 teachers, or both. With supplemental funding, NCSI plans to offer computational science workshops and sponsor educational activities for in-service teachers, business and government leaders, and the general public. NCSI participants then assist others on their own campuses and at neighboring institutions to introduce computational science in their own classes. NCSI proceeds along three synergistic but distinct routes that can be modeled as PULL, PUSH, and PERMEATE

The Shodor Computational Science Institute (SCSI) serves as the organizing element for Shodor's curriculum development and faculty enhancement projects. Our goal is the development, collection, and maintenance of learning resources in computational science education and interdisciplinary studies. A modular design of workshops, seminars, and support activities introduce and enable the authentic use of modeling across the undergraduate mathematics, science, and computer science curriculum. A special focus of the SCSI Project is the formation and support of teams of faculty at small-to-medium sized schools to work together to enhance their professional standing through the use of technology and the wider use of mathematical modeling and the tools of computational science in their classrooms. This focus on modeling will enable faculty to learn how to do computational science and how to teach computational science in engaging and enriching interactive environments incorporating the same tools, techniques and technologies that characterize the modern practice of science and engineering. Continuous support and follow-up, materials development, access to high performance computing and visualization resources, and evaluation will be coordinated and enabled by using collaborative tools and electronic networks. We have had significant success in reaching many faculty and institutions, primarily in the southeast, but with additional schools across the country. You can view a

Welcome to the Computational Science Education Reference Desk!
Here at CSERD we are compiling information and materials to help you learn about computational science and incorporate it into your classroom at all levels. CSERD's approach is to do three things:
  • Create a catalog of resources
  • Give you a forum to review that material and speak to each other and to ask us questions.
  • Create original computational science activities for you to use in your class, or to use as an example in creating your own activities.
