COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE
What is Computational Science?
Computational Science is the study of scientific problem solving using computers. It covers the formulation and analysis of problems, the use of software packages and programs to solve these problems computationally, simulations and modeling, mathematical and numerical analysis, high-performance supercomputing, graphics, visualisation, and programming. It differs from other computing courses which are concerned with what goes on behind the scenes in computers: how to design and build them, how to design their operating systems, and what computers can and cannot do.
What to computational scientists do?
Computational Scientists will have very strong problem-solving and analytical skills. They will observe scenarios and determine solutions for clients. These skills have made computational scientists highly sought after in the areas of scientific and financial research, in delivering industry and corporate IT solutions and assisting with policy development in government departments. They may work in large corporate consultancies, hospitals, universities or government.

The ISU Undergraduate Computational Science Laboratory (UCSL) Project
The Undergraduate Computational Science Lab (UCSL) is a joint venture between the departments of Physics, Chemistry, and Applied Computer Science. The lab provides the basis for development of both curricular and research initiatives in multidisciplinary conputational science. Faculty from these departments have developed a sequence of interdisciplinary and specialized courses designed to enhance students' knowlege of and experience with solving science problems with computational methods.
The UCSL project was initiated with support from the National Science Foundation (grant # DUE 9352362). Project personnel include five faculty in Physics, two from Chemistry, and one from Applied Computer Science.

Computational Science and Engineering Degree Program at Rice University
As a consequence of the rapid increase in computing power over the past decade, modern science and engineering have become increasingly reliant on computation as an aid to research, development, and design. Indeed, one can hardly imagine a large-scale engineering project that does not call upon some aspect of the mathematical and computational sciences. However, using the newest and most powerful computers requires a knowledge of parallel and vector capabilities along with a variety of other things such as visualization, networking, and programming environments. In addition, new algorithms and analytic techniques have been developed that enhance the power of these computational tools. The Computational and Applied Mathematics Department The program is governed by a committee of faculty chosen by the Deans of Engineering and Natural Sciences, with ultimate oversight by the Provost. The Computational Science Committee (CSC) is responsible for assisting the student in designing an appropriate course of study. It also sets the examination requirements for each student and insures the integrity of the degree program. The CSC consists of five to ten participating faculty. It is not a separate department but rather a mechanism for initiating the inter-disciplinary research required to advance computational science. The degree program consists of two degree tracks. One of these will lead to a Ph.D. and the other to a professional masters degree.

    Computational Science

Computational Science is a new field that is rapidly emerging out of collaborative research by teams of mathematicians, computer scientists, and scientists, covering a wide variety of disciplines from the physical and health sciences. Rather than viewing Computational Science simply as potential applications of core subjects in their disciplines, mathematicians and computer scientists see these collaborative projects as a source of new algorithms and ideas that will extend and enrich those fields. Scientists also see Computational Science as a new endeavor, taking a place along side theoretical science and experimental science as a fundamental new mode of scientific enquiry. (From the preface to the Computational Science Education Project

    Introduction
Computational Science is an emerging field involving applications of sophisticated computational techniques to build models and solve problems related to science and engineering. It complements existing theoretical and experimental approaches and may be thought of as a new mode of scientific inquiry. At Stevens undergraduates may study computational science through an interdisciplinary program leading to a bachelor of science in mathematics with a specialization in an area of science or engineering. The current specializations are
