This project, originally funded by two grants from the National Science Foundation, promotes the use of ideas from the modern theory of dynamical systems in the traditional sophomore-level course in differential equations. Qualitative, analytic, and numerical approaches are stressed throughout the course. We have written a textbook published by Brooks/Cole that supports our approach, and occasionally we conduct workshops at various sites around the country.
    Please note:
Our publisher is Brooks/Cole Publishing Co., a division of Thomson Learning, not PWS (the company that handled the original preliminary edition). To contact Brooks/Cole for faculty support, call 800-423-0563 ( ISBN numbers and information about ancillaries

Interactive Learning in Calculus and Differential Equations with Applications
Click on this picture for a description of how it was generated. The Mathematics Department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) established a computerized learning environment, consisting of a classroom with 31 Macintosh Centris 650s and a laboratory with 12 Macintosh LCs, all equipped with Mathematica . Mathematica's notebook feature enables science students to actively learn calculus and differential equations with guided discovery and exploration. The project was funded through a National Science Foundation Instrumentation and Laboratory Improvement grant, number DUE-9351896. IUP's project has several significant attributes.
    • The Mathematics Department is fully implementing this curriculum in all sections of its science calculus sequence and in the two-semester differential equations sequence.
    • Eleven faculty, comprising approximately one third of IUP's mathematics faculty, are coinvestigators.
    • The curricular revisions are being coordinated with the science departments at IUP, who are also integrating active learning and technology in their courses. This collaboration, based on common pedagogical goals and software, will bring more scientific applications into mathematics courses and strengthen the use of mathematics in science courses.
    • All students in the Mathematics Department are involved. Mathematics and Applied Mathematics majors are required to take Differential Equations, and Mathematics Education majors have a unit devoted to the project in the teacher preparation course, Computers and Calculators in Secondary Mathematics.

Papers submitted to this journal should be correct, new and non-trivial. Emphasis will be placed on papers that are judged to be specially timely , and of interest to a substantial number of mathematicians working in this area.
Instructions to Authors: Manuscripts should be typed on one side of 8.5 X 11 inch (21.5 X 28 cm) paper, double-spaced (including references), with wide margins. The author's name should be typed on the line below the title, and the affiliation and address should follow on the next line. Place any footnotes to the title at the bottom of page 1.
Each paper requires a brief abstract not exceeding 150 words summarizing the techniques and main conclusions. AMS subject classifications must accompany all articles. They must be placed at the bottom of page 1 before any other footnotes. Each paper requires a separate page containing an abbreviated version of the title for the running head no more than 40 characters long, and the name and mailing address of the author to whom proofs should be sent. Equations should be centered with the number of the equation placed in parentheses at the right margin. Each figure is to be drafted in high contrast on a separate piece of white paper in a form suitable for photographic reproduction and reduction.
