The Sixth Bay Area Discrete Math Day will take place at the University of California at Davis , on Saturday March 1, 2003 between 10:00 and 6:00. The location is 3 Kleiber. Directions to UC Davis and a UC Davis campus map can be found here . The closest parking lot is VP25. Bay Area Discrete Math Days are one-day meetings aimed at facilitating communication between researchers and graduate students of discrete mathematics around the San Francisco Bay Area. These days happen semi-annually and strive to create a fairly informal atmosphere to talk about discrete mathematics. The term "discrete mathematics" is chosen to include at least the following topics: Algebraic and Enumerative Combinatorics, Discrete Geometry, Graph Theory, Coding and Design Theory, Combinatorial Aspects of Computational Algebra and Geometry, Combinatorial Optimization, Probabilistic Combinatorics, and Combinatorics in Mathematical Physics.

Discrete Mathematics includes a number of mathematical topics and techniques that arise in everyday life. During the past 30 years, discrete mathematics has grown rapidly and has become a significant area of mathematics. Discrete Mathematics is the language of a large body of science and underlies decisions that individuals will have to make their own lives, in their professions, and as citizens. Discrete Mathematics has many practical applications that are useful for solving some of the problems of our society and that are meaningful to our students. Its problems make mathematics come alive for students, and helps them see the relevance of mathematics to the real world Discrete Mathematics is fun to do, is often geometrically based, and stimulates an interest in mathematics on the part of the students at all levels and of all abilities. Five major themes of discrete mathematics should be addressed at all K-12 grade levels: systematic listing, counting, discrete mathematical modeling using graphs, iterative (repetitive) patterns and processes. In summary, Discrete Mathematics is an exciting and appropriate avenue for working toward (and achieving the goal of) educating informed citizens who are better able to function in our increasingly complex technological world. They also have better reasoning power and problem-solving skills and Discrete Mathematics is an excellent tool for improving both of those skills.

    Assignments
    Assignments should be checked in no later than 11:59pm on the due date. Let's adopt the following policy regarding lateness: 10% off for one day late, 20% off for two days late. Unless there is some compelling reason, no further extensions will be granted. Make sure to check beforehand.
    General
    This course is about the computational aspects of some of the standard concepts of discrete mathematics (relations, functions, logic, graphs, algebra, automata), with emphasis on efficient algorithms. We begin with a brief introduction to computability and computational complexity. Other topics include: iteration, orbits and fixed points; order and equivalence relations; propositional logic and satisfiability testing; finite fields and shift register sequences; finite state machines and cellular automata. Computational support for some of the material is available in the form of a Mathematica package. Prerequisites: 15-251 or equivalent.

    • Kolman, Busby, and Ross, Discrete Mathematical Structures , Fourth Edition.
    Course Description and Objectives:
    Discrete mathematics concerns structures and processes that are finite or countable. It may be best described as the mathematics required in the theoretical study of computer science. Specific objectives for this class include the following:
    • To study mathematical structures such as partially ordered sets, lattices, Boolean algebras, semigroups, and finite state machines. If time permits, we will also study graphs and trees.
    • To introduce some applications of these topics in computer science, such as the use of Boolean algebras in designing circuits, and applications of semigroups and finite state machines to formal languages.
    • To develop the mathematical maturity needed for further study, particularly in the area of abstract algebra.
    Grading:
    Grades will be based on three tests (100 points each), three assignmentss (15 points each), the final exam (150 points), and class participation (5 points) for a total of 500 points. The grading scale will be roughly as follows:
