Graphical Models
It will be convenient at times to represent the qualitative structure of dynamical systems using appropriate graphical notation. In this section, we introduce such a notation and use it to characterize various learning problems.
Learning Techniques
The document corresponding to this section is very much like the current document. It consists of an introduction followed by short summaries and links to other documents. The documents linked to this page provide much of the content on learning in this tutorial.
Miscellaneous Techniques
There is a lot of mathematics associated with machine learning techniques; much more than we could possibly survey. However, there are a few techniques that appear often enough that it will help to have some passing knowledge of. Currently, we are planning to cover signal processing and function approximation applications of the discrete Fourier transform and singular value decomposition. In addition, we provide a quick introduction to Gibbs sampling which plays an important role in dealing with incomplete information.

Dynamical Systems and Fractals
This is an announcement of a new interdisciplinary course at Oklahoma State University on symbolic and analytic dynamics, with an overview of fractal geometry. Announcement: The course was completed in early May, 1996. The lecture notes run to about 175 pages when processed by LaTeX, but the complete outline was not filled in. We hope to enhance the chapters on real and complex iteration in subsequent iterations of this course, as well as add new topics. A special thanks to my students!. Their interaction was essential to the writing of the notes. The only mathematical prerequisites are Calculus . Hopefully, this course will be accessible to as many students as possible who have interests in these emerging areas of natural science. The course will be conducted in the computer classroom MS 203, and much use will be made of various programs, including FRACTINT MAPLE , and some others, for demonstration purposes. It is possible to arrange graduate credit (5000 level) for graduate students. Course materials and outline will be added below as we develop the course:

    Fast Oriented Line Integral Convolution for Vector Field Visualization via the Internet

    (IEEE Visualization '97 Proceedings) (Applet Version 1.0) 1) General Features This Java Applet can be used for the exploration on two-dimensional analytical defined dynamical systems. The system is defined by a set of two differential equations, which will be evaluated within adjustable regions forming a two-dimensional vector field. Basic visualization methods as well as advanced methods can now be applied to the vector field. Each resulting visualization is displayed in an own window allowing easy comparison of different results. Some of the methods also can be animated to give a deeper insight to the systems dynamic. In the following a short description of the tool is given: 2) How to enter a dynamical system The first two lines of the applet are used for entering the dynamical system (see Fig.1). The state variables are called x and y and only state variables (and no derivatives) can be used on the right hand side of the equations. For each variable a region can be specified, for which the vector field will be calculated. In the Parameter section nine parameter can be entered. This is useful for cleaning up the display of long formulas. Parameters can not only be defined by constants, but can also be made up by difficult calculations, state variables and other parameter (Attention: avoid recursive definition like "a = b" and "b=a" for they will result in a system crash).

    NDimViewer: Visualization of High-Dimensional Dynamical Systems NDimViewer is a web-based visualization system for numerical solutions of dynamical systems and representation of the calculated data using one out of three techniques: Extruded Parallel Coordinates Linking With Wings , or Three-Dimensional Parallel Coordinates . It is specialized for high-dimensional dynamical systems with a dimension count up to 25, depending on the chosen technique. The implementation itself is separated into a calculation and a visualization part, which are treated independently. ( more
    Color-table animation for vector fields
    FROLIC is a fast variant of Line Integral Convolution (LIC) and illustrates 2D vector fields by approximating streamlets by a set of disks with varying intensity. Color-table animation is a very fast way of animating FROLIC images. Various color-table compositions are investigated. When animating FROLIC images visual artifacts (pulsation, synchronization) must be avoided. Several strategies in this respect are dealt with.
    Visualizing Dynamical Systems near Critical Points
    The visualization of dynamical systems, e.g., flow fields, already provides quite a reasonable number of useful techniques. Many approaches seen so far either facilitate the visualization of the abstract skeleton of flow topology, or directly represent flow dynamics by the use of integral cues, such as stream lines, stream surfaces, etc. In this paper we present two visualization techniques which feature both approaches and demonstrate that combining both techniques, synergetic advantages are gained.

    This program can be used in the study of the dynamics of Newton's method for polynomials of degree less than sixteen. One can specify the polynomial by either entering its coefficients or entering its roots. The roots can be entered with the use of a mouse. The basins of attraction of each of the roots are drawn. This program can also be used to study the parameter space associated with Newton's method for cubics, in which two roots are fixed at -1 and 1, and each pixel w represents the third root. Newton's method for the resulting polynomial p(z) = (z-w)(z-1)(z+1) is started at the center of the triangle formed by the three roots and the pixel w is colored according to which root that orbit converges to, or is colored black if convergence cannot be determined after a specified iteration count. There is also a module for the study of the Mandelbrot set along with the associated Julia sets. After the Mandelbrot set is drawn it is possible to choose a point with a mouse and either draw its associated Julia set or draw the orbit of the point. These drawings are made in smaller windows which can be kept on the screen so that one can compare different points.

    Dynamical systems theory is especially well-suited for determining the possible asymptotic states (at both early and late times) of cosmological models, particularly when the governing equations are a finite system of autonomous ordinary differential equations. We begin with a brief review of dynamical systems theory. We then discuss cosmological models as dynamical systems and point out the important role of self-similar models. We review the asymptotic properties of spatially homogeneous perfect fluid models in general relativity. We then discuss some results concerning scalar field models with an exponential potential (both with and without barotropic matter). Finally, we discuss some isotropic cosmological models derived from the string effective action.

    Dynamical systems: Simulation and visualization
    One of the goals of the dynamical systems project at the Geometry Center is an interface between the software package DsTool , for numerical simulation of dynamical systems (created at the Center for Applied Mathematics, Cornell University), and Geomview , for visualization of geometric objects in 3 (and higher) dimensions (created at the Geometry Center). This interface allows one to see, as it is computed, a trajectory in configuration space of the dynamical system being modelled. Several examples are given below and short movies have been made of a specific computed trajectory. Also, two students from the 1996 summer program working with Bob Thurman and Patrick Worfolk (postdocs at the Geometry Center) worked on computing and visualizing halo orbits and their stable and unstable manifolds for the restricted three body problem.
