    Ecosystems, Stock Markets, Orbits, Clouds, Turbulence.......
    Dynamical systems are systems that are in constant flux. Examples include the stock market, ecosystems, the weather, the human body...The list is endless. Traditional mathematics based on Newtonian principles has only been able to understand and model these systems by taking them apart and looking at the individual pieces. We can use linear equations to model the pieces, however, this gives us an incomplete picture of the behavior of these systems. Eventually, we run up against the need to model these systems using non-linear equations, most of which are unsolvable. But many of the pioneers in chaos discovered that graphing these equations using feedback loops allowed them to look at pictures of these systems, and we are beginning to understand much more about them using these graphs. The following demonstrations and activities provide more information to understand dynamical systems.

    Code 6410
    The Center is responsible for the development and application of theoretical and numerical methods for the study of the fluid and molecular properties of complex dynamical systems. Current research in the Center focuses on applications of computational techniques to solve fundamental and applied problems in combustion, turbulence, propulsion, acoustics and flows inside and over ships and submarines; on molecular dynamics and quantum chemical approaches to the study of complex molecules.
    Flame and Fire Dynamics
    The detailed structure, stability and dynamics of a variety of flames and fires is studied using computational techniques that solve for the chemical reaction kinetics, diffusive transport of species, radiation and other heat losses in addition to the fluid dynamics. The work on flames in premixed gases has focussed on different mechanisms that can lead to instabilities and the resultant multidimensional structure. The effects of gravity and radiative losses from soot on flame lift-off and blow-off from burners has been investigated for diffusion flames. The transition to turbulence (shown in the Figure) and enhanced mixing efficiency of non-circular fuel injection nozzles is being currently studied. The interaction of a water-mist and other alternatives to halon on flames and fires is also being studied using the computational reactive flow capabilities developed in the center.

    This workshop is intended for researchers in Dynamical Systems and related fields. The general aim is to present the state of the art of the field. Visitor Information Rationale: In Dynamical Systems theory, often the objects which are of great interest to mathematicians have properties which make them very difficult to compute by standard numerical methods. This workshop will focus on these computational challenges, bringing together experts in dynamical systems and in numerical analysis. Examples of the problems to be addressed include: localization and unfoldings of bifurcation points of higher codimension, computation of global invariant manifolds including center manifolds and inertial manifolds for ordinary and partial differential equations, efficient computation of normal forms, symmetric dynamical systems, strange attractors, Liapunov exponents, heteroclinic cycles, stable long time integrators, phase space reconstruction.     Our research is mainly concerned with nonlinear dynamics including aspects from control theory. We develop general approaches for the qualitative analysis and the control of the long-time behavior of dynamical systems by exploiting special structures, such as small parameters at the highest derivatives, symplectic structure, etc. Furthermore, we construct algorithms for the numerical analysis of the differential equations including bifurcation phenomena. The methods are applied to simulate and optimize the behavior of semiconductor lasers and to model-reduction in reaction kinetics. Presently, the major projects are
