Entropy and the Laws of Thermodynamics
The principal energy laws that govern every organization are derived from two famous laws of thermodynamics. The second law, known as Carnot's principle, is controlled by the concept of entropy. Today the word entropy is as much a part of the language of the physical sciences as it is of the human sciences. Unfortunately, physicists, engineers, and sociologists use indiscriminately a number of terms that they take to be synonymous with entropy, such as disorder, probability, noise, random mixture, heat; or they use terms they consider synonymous with antientropy, such as information, neguentropy, complexity, organization, order, improbability. There are at least three ways of defining entropy:
  • in terms of thermodynamics (the science of heat), where the names of Mayer, Joule, Carnot, and Clausius (1865) are important;
  • in terms of statistical theory, which fosters the equivalence of entropy and disorder as a result of the work of Maxwell, Gibbs, and Boltzmann (1875), and
  • in terms of information theory , which demonstrates the equivalence of neguentropy (the opposite of entropy) and information as a result of the work of Szilard, Gabor, Rothstein, and Brillouin (1940-1950)
The two principal laws of thermodynamics apply only to closed systems, that is, entities with which there can be no exchange of energy, information, or material. The universe in its totality might be considered a closed system of this type; this would allow the two laws to be applied to it.

unavailable energy or molecular disorder. Entropy is at a maximum when the molecules in a gas are at the same energy level. Entropy should not be confused with uncertainty . Uncertainty is at a minimum when all elements are in the same category. ( Umpleby see statistical entropy, a measure of variation, dispersion or diversity; see thermodynamic entropy, a measure of usable energy. The similarity between the two types of entropy is merely formal in that both are expressed as the logarithm of a probability . The thermodynamic entropy S = k log W is a function of the dispersion W of heat, with k being Boltzmann's CONSTANT. The statistical entropy of an event a is H_a = -k log p_a where p_a is the statistical probability of a and k is arbitrarily set so as to make the logarithm dual ( see bit ). The negative sign gave rise to the notion of negentropy (Material entropy see pollution, social entropy Krippendorff Next ... Help URL= http://pespmc1.vub.ac.be/ASC/ENTROPY.html

New uses for camera phones...
No. 89 in an occasional series. Whilst at the Columbia Road Flower Market this morning I saw/overheard someone say to one of the traders "I'm looking for a particular plant - I've got a picture", before pulling out their Nokia 7650 and showing a picture on it. An explanation for those who don't live in London; Columbia Road is something of a Sunday morning insitution. For years it's been traditional for hundreds of middle-class Londoners to descend on the East End to buy flowers and convince themselves that they've been incredibly virtuous by getting up early (it closes at, erm..., 2pm) and trekking (it's only a short walk from London's fashionable Hoxton, or ten minutes in the Golf) across town. I'd be prepared to bet that on Sunday mornings there are more Charlottes, Imogens, Tarquins and Ruperts in E1 than any other part of town. Yah?

MaxEnt and Exponential Models
This page contains pedagogically-oriented material on maximum entropy and exponential models. The emphasis is towards modelling of discrete-valued stochastic processes which arise in human language applications, such as language modelling. All links point to postscript files unless otherwise indicated.
Tutorials
An online introduction to maxent This is a high-level tutorial on how to use MaxEnt for modelling discrete stochastic processes. The motivating example is the task of determining the most appropriate translation of a French word in context. The tutorial discusses the process of growing an exponential model by automatic feature selection ("inductive learning," if you will) and also the task of estimating maximum-likelihood parameters for a model containing a fixed set of features. Convexity, Maximum Likelihood and All That This note is meant as a gentle but comprehensive introduction to the expectation-maximization (EM) and improved iterative scaling (IIS) algorithms, two popular techniques in maximum likelihood estimation. The focus in this tutorial is on the foundation common to the two algorithms: convex functions and their convenient properties. Where examples are called for, we draw from applications in human language technology.

YOU HAVE ARRIVED

Outpost Entropy is a literary magazine. We believe there is a poetry out there synonymous with our times that accurately reflects the continuity of discontinuity, the multifariousness in which we attempt, and manage to, integrate our lives.
We aim to publish it. WHAT DO WE LIKE?
We try not to let our biases blind us, and be as objective as is possible for us. We attempt to evaluate submissions on the basis of how well they do what they set out to do according to (loosely speaking) the genre they fall into. We like postcards from the edge. We like work that is complex, all over the place, but whole. We can dig the political. We can go for an emphatically expressed anything or rant. We like when we can find a certain harmony in the onslaught that takes it back out yet again. We like to laugh. We like wit and cycnacism well done. We'd like your coolest experiments. We like the experiencial that takes us for the ride. We don't care if you make sense or not as long as there is a complicity in the 'non-sense'. We really have a hard time suspending our prejudices when it comes to the blow by blow, day in the life, overly superficial narrative that has little to no asthetic depth.
You probably have as good a chance here as anywhere.

In physics, the word entropy has important physical implications as the amount of "disorder" of a system. In mathematics, a more abstract definition is used. The (Shannon) entropy of a variable X is defined as

EntropyPool and Entropy Filter Home Page
Welcome to the EntropyPool and Entropy Filter demonstration site! This is version 0.1.11 of the system. This Web site embodies a demonstration of the EntropyPool, entropy filter and gatherer daemon. This site also contains a snapshot of the Java code and documentation. This system gathers its `entropy' or truely random noise from a number of sources, including local processes, files and devices, Web page hits and remote Web sites. The EntropyPool system can generate bits which have enough real and unpredictable randomness in them to make them a good source of bits for cryptographically-secure keys for example, and in general can enhance the security of any Web- or command-line- based Java system. The EntropyPool can also be used as a good source of bits to improve the statistical properties of other random-number sources. For example, if you work in a merchant bank and you run a Monte Carlo pricing method for a complex financial instrument then you may want to run it once in your test or batch harness with a fixed seed to guarantee reproducability, and once with a seed drawn from a local EntropyPool to ensure that the result so computed is close enough, and that there is nothing special about the fixed seed you are using for your problem.

It's been quite a long time since I've done anything with this page. To start with, Entropy CTF is no longer. I'll be the first to admit it was a bunch of messy code, but I did teach myself C while writing that mod. And I had a lot of fun. I wish I had more time to clean it up and make everything work right; it could have been really slick... On a slightly better note, I present 4d Deathmatch to you. This was the second and finall mod I wrote for Quake2. A lot cleaner, and a hell of a lot of fun to play (at least that's what the beta test team thought). I put it together and got 90% of the features working, but didn't get a chance to put up a nifty website for it. Hopefully, some server op will grab a copy and realize how damn cool it is and setup a server. I'll give you a quick rundown of the mod and the basis of gameplay, expect some better docs middle of May or so (summer break).
