Maximum Entropy and Overlapping Events
Eric Sven Ristad The purpose of this applet is to help develop intuition about maximum entropy distributions. A central advantage of the maximum entropy framework is its ability to model overlapping events without increasing the number of parameters or fragmenting the training data. Using maximum entropy techniques, it is possible to model a probability distribution on n elements using only n free parameters. Consider a space U with three natural events: A B , and C . Each event divides the space into two sets: those points included in the event, and those that are not included. Since the three events overlap, they partition the space into eight disjoint regions: ABC aBC AbC abC ABc aBc Abc , and abc . A lower case letter denotes the complement of the corresponding event. For example, a is the complement of A , and so the region aBC is the intersection of B and C and the complement of A In the maximum entropy framework, we may compute the probabilities of the eight regions directly from the probabilities of the three events and the sizes of the regions. All other things being equal, the maximum entropy distribution will assign more probability to larger regions and to regions contained in events with the greatest probability. When all regions are the same size the maximum entropy distribution will make the three events independent.

82. EGD: The Entropy Gathering Daemon
EGD The entropy Gathering Daemon. egd0.6 had a major security problem thatcaused it to only use a tiny fraction of the entropy it gathered.
http://egd.sourceforge.net/
EGD: The Entropy Gathering Daemon
A userspace substitute for /dev/random, written in perl. One of the nice features of the Linux kernel (and certain *BSD kernels) is the /dev/random device. This is a little character device that gives you random numbers when you read it. In a variety of places scattered throughout the kernel, certain interrupts (network packets arriving, keyboard hits, mouse movement) cause a timestamp and some event information to be hashed into an "entropy pool". The pool, perhaps 4k in size, always contains very random data, but as bits are "stirred" in, a counter is incremented to reflect the fact that the poll is now even more random than before. When you read from /dev/random, you get a hashed portion of the pool, and the counter is decremented. This gives you high quality cryptographically strong random data. The Gnu Privacy Guard (GPG), along with many other encryption routines (pgp, ssh, even the sequence-number selection algorithm used by the kernel's TCP stack), use this device to seed a secure random number generator. Encryption uses lots of random data, and hybrid public-key/ symmetric-cipher encryption uses even more. EGD is an Entropy Gathering Daemon meant to be used on systems that can run GPG but which don't have this convenient source of random bits. It is a regular user-space program that sits around, running programs like 'w' and 'last' and 'vmstat', collecting the randomness (or at least the unpredictability) inherent in the output of these system statistics programs when used on a reasonably busy system. It slowly stirs the output of these gathering programs into a pool of entropy, much like the linux kernel device, and allows other programs to read out random bits from this pool.

November 19. entropy. For another discussion of entropy, see The answer is entropy .We have two ways of figuring out if the entropy of a substance changes.
http://electron4.phys.utk.edu/141/nov19/November 19.html
November 19 Entropy Consider a system in two different conditions, for example 1kg of ice at o C, which melts and turns into 1kg of water at o C. We associate with each condition a quantity called the entropy . The entropy of any substance is a function of the condition of the substance. For an ideal gas it is a function of its temperature and volume, and for a solid and liquid it is a function of its temperature and internal structure. The entropy is independent of the past history of the substance. The entropy of the 1kg of water at o C is the same if we obtained the water from ice, or if we cooled the water from room temperature down to o C. When a small amount of heat D Q is added to a substance at temperature T, the entropy of the substance changes by D S = D Q / T. When heat is removed, the entropy decreases, when heat is added the entropy increases. Entropy has units of Joules per Kelvin. An ideal frictionless reversible engine removes D Q from some substance at T , does some work, and delivers D Q at to some other substance at T , with D Q / T D Q / T . The entropy of the substance at T decreases by D Q / T and the entropy of the substance at T increases by the same amount. There is no net change in entropy, if we consider the entire system. But a real engine always delivers more heat at T

It's dead Jim!
My beloved iBook, companion through tick and thin (mostly thick) player of MP3's, keeper of my e-mail and connection to the rest of the world, is dead. It started dying on Tuesday night. First there was the Kernel Panic. Then the extream screen distortion when it booted up again. Then the prayers as I tired to coax it back to life after shutting it off because I couldn't read the screen well enough to do a proper shutdown. I did end up getting most of my documents off of the machine. My address book and saved e-mail are hosed though. I ended up spending $60 and an hour on the phone Wednesday with an Apple Tech to determine 'Yep is sure is busted. Why don't you send that in?' I don't know what made me angrier, the fact that I had to pay $60 for phone support when all I wanted to do was send it in for repair, the fact that the technician misspelled BOTH my first name and last name (I corrected him three times about my first name) or that they sent the shipping box to my home when I specifically asked them to ship it to me at work. The technician was very specific to tell me that Apple couldn't be responsible for data loss, and asked for my admin username and password. This was

are jointly sponsoring a Symposium on Entropy June 25 - 28, 2000 at the
Physik komplexer Systeme
(Dresden)
APPLICATION FORM:
online ps-file The idea of the meeting is to exhibit the role of the concept of entropy in various areas of mathematics and theoretical physics. In particular the meeting will address in what way the use of this concept is based on similar structures and ideas in these fields and will point out possible differences. The goal of the meeting is to enhance the exchange of knowledge between researchers in different areas on the meaning and applicability of entropy and related ideas. Issues that will be addressed are
  • entropy and irreversibility entropy as Lyapunov function entropy and combinatorics entropy and differential geometry quantum entropy entropy and information

For this purpose about twelve leading researchers will give 60 minute presentations on the role and use of entropy in their field followed by a discussion of 30 minutes prepared at least partially by a discussant. Survey lectures on the basic concepts and ideas concerning entropy will provide a common basis for contributions on more special aspects.

entropy. For a specific examination of information entropy in COL 49, see TheParadox of Truth, the Truth of entropy . Origins of entropy in Pynchon.
http://www.pynchon.pomona.edu/entropy/
Introduction Thomas Pynchon achieves an unusual synthesis of art and science, and develops the unique character of his ambitious, "post-modern" works with a renaissance conception of continuous knowledge. Engineering principals animate his fiction in literal explorations, and then escalate into larger thematic matter. The Crying of Lot 49 (1965) traces Entropy through the theoretical Maxwell's Demon device (the greatest historical challenge to the second law of thermodynamics), and also extends the property and Demon to metaphorically control and inform the journey of Oedipa Mass. Pynchon's reader travels an analogous odyssey to the protagonist, sorting information, flirting with chaos and circumnavigating truth.
Entropy
Entropy is a quantity that, in its two contexts, characterizes not only all form and life in the universe, but all signal, language, information and written material ever produced anywhere. There are two fields which define this concept: Thermodynamics is the science of the relations between heat and other forms of energy. It deals with the changes that occur in a system if the energy distribution is unbalanced, therefore it "can be regarded as governing the direction of all physical changes taking place in the universe. With time, the energy within a system will inevitably tend to become distributed in the most probable pattern, which consists of all the individual particles of the system engaging in random, disordered motion" (OED). Thermodynamic entropy is the measure of this disorganization in a system. Furthermore, this "most probable pattern" is actually a state of equal energy among particles, as collisions cause bodies to exchange heat. A closed system inevitably proceeds toward uniformity of energy.

"You have to move on."

The Nerd Trio, riding motorcycles, chases a pair of vampires through the cemetery. One of the vamps has a disk of some kind in his hand. There's a three-geek pileup and the vamps escape, only to be met by Buffy on the other side of the gate. The disk gets dropped, and the geeks grab it and run away before Buffy sees them. She's a little preoccupied, since the vamps are putting up a good fight and Spike is sitting on a nearby wall. He grabs a vampire and offers to help her out - if she'll..... ....she cuts him off, refusing to tell her friends about their trysts. He can tell them if he wants to - they forgave her for trying to kill them the week before, so she knows they'd deal with this OK. If that's true, Spike asks, then why won't she sleep with him again? Buffy stakes the remaining vamp. "Because I don't love you," she replies. "Like hell," he mutters as she walks away.
Xander sits alone in his apartment, drinking and listening to sad music. He gets up slowly and goes out for a walk. A tearful Anya watches him from behind the bushes.

Willow waits for Tara at the university, and begins an awkward "do you wanna go out for coffee sometime?" conversation. They're both very nervous and cute, and it's clear that they want more than coffee. Tara agrees to a meeting.

The GNU Privacy Guard is a GPL'ed implementation of the new OpenPGP standard (RFC 2440). It is mostly interoperable with PGP 5.0, uses no patented or otherwise restricted algorithms, and can be used legally just about everywhere (except perhaps France where a lot of crypto is just plain outlawed). I'm following the development closely, submitting bug reports and suggestions. I'm hoping to see some extensions put in place that will make it easy to, for instance, keep my private key on an iButton or in my Pilot. My GPG public key is available here . Feel free to use it when you send me mail. Most of the files I make available for download are signed with it.
