Ethnomathematics and its Place in the History and Pedagogy of Mathematics
Ubiritan D'Ambrosio This paper first appeared in For the Learning of Mathematics 5, 1 (February 1985). It has been updated for this volume with additions by the author. Introductory Remarks In this paper we will discuss some basic issues which may lay the ground for an historical approach to the teaching of mathematics in a novel way. Our project relies primarily on developing the concept of ethnomathematics. Anton Dimitriu's extensive history of logic (Dimitriu, 1977) briefly describes Indian and Chinese logics mercy as background for his general historical study of the logics that originated from Greek thought. We know from other sources that for example, the concept of the 'number one' is a quite different concept in the Nyaya-Vaisesika epistemology; 'the number one is eternal in eternal substances whereas two, etc. are always non-eternal' and from this proceeds an arithmetic, (Potter 1977). Practically nothing is known about the logic underlying the Inca treatment of numbers though what is known through the study of quipus suggests that they used mixed qualitative-quantitative language (Ascher and Ascher, 1981).

An Exploration of Ideas Across Cultures

Introduction [HTML] or [PDF format] Mathematics Elsewhere is a fascinating and important contribution to a global view of mathematics. Presenting mathematical ideas of peoples from a variety of small-scale and traditional cultures, it humanizes our view of mathematics and expands our conception of what is mathematical. Through engaging examples of how particular societies structure time, reach decisions about the future, make models and maps, systematize relationships, and create intriguing figures, Marcia Ascher demonstrates that traditional cultures have mathematical ideas that are far more substantial and sophisticated than is generally acknowledged. Malagasy divination rituals, for example, rely on complex algebraic algorithms. And some cultures use calendars far more abstract and elegant than our own. Ascher also shows that certain concepts assumed to be universalthat time is a single progression, for instance, or that equality is a static relationshipare not. The Basque notion of equivalence, for example, is a dynamic and temporal one not adequately captured by the familiar equal sign. Other ideas taken to be the exclusive province of professionally trained Western mathematicians are, in fact, shared by people in many societies. The ideas discussed come from geographically varied cultures, including the Borana and Malagasy of Africa, the Tongans and Marshall Islanders of Oceania, the Tamil of South India, the Basques of Western Europe, and the Balinese and Kodi of Indonesia.

This collection brings together classic, previously-published articles and new research to present the emerging field of ethnomathematics from a critical perspective, challenging particular ways in which Eurocentrism permeates mathematics education. The contributors identify several of the field's broad themes - reconsidering what counts as mathematical knowledge, considering interactions between culture and mathematical knowledge, and uncovering hidden and distorted histories of mathematical knowledge. The book offers a diversity of ethnomathematics perspectives that develop both theoretical and practical issues from various disciplines including mathematics, mathematics education, history, anthropology, cognitive psychology, feminist studies, and African studies written by authors from Brazil, England, Australia, Mozambique, Palestine, Belgium, and the United States.

image created by Jama Musse Jama The study of Ethnomathematics or the interplay between math and culture, moves beyond simply "ethnic mathematics." It is a larger construct moving beyond the traditional Westernized concept of scientific history; it emphasizes the multi-cultural role of peoples throughout time in the history of the sciences. Most specifically, it works to integrate methods of mathematical instruction (engineered towards poor, indegious, or tribal populations) with complex indegenous systems. These systems have the ability to move beyond static numbers and into a more interpretive realm of world view/cognition. Now, numerical values can be replaced or transformed by such concepts as "reciprocity" or familial relationshipsinferences play as large a role as counting. Legendary ethnomathematics scholar Ubiratan D'Ambrosio (1999), in Ethnomatematics. The Art or Technique of Explaining and Knowing History of Mathematics in the Periphery: The Basin Metaphor , writes: Ethnomathematics is situated in the area of transition between cultural anthropology and what can be called an anthopological mathematics . From there, studies of the

Ethnomathematics is the study of mathematics that takes into consideration the culture in which mathematics arises. It is a subject that values and recognises the contributions of non-European cultures to the development of mathematics. Ethnomathematicians attempt to describe and understand the mathematical world as others see it, to give mathematics a more global perspective. This paper, based on research conducted for my masters thesis reports on mathematical ideas related to counting that are found in Maldivian society and are related to traditional and cultural contexts, so that these ideas can be considered for inclusion in future primary mathematics curricula in Maldives. 1.
