    Quantum Field Theory
    The next contradiction that physicists faced was between quantum mechanics (which had been developed over the thirty years following Planck's seminal insight) and the special theory of relativity. Most of the work in quantum mechanics was in the Galilean (or non-relativistic) approximation.
    To be sure, Dirac had developed a relativistic wave equation for the electron, which was an important advance, but there was still a basic contradiction that needed to be resolved. The new feature that is required in a successful union of quantum mechanics and special relativity is the possibility of the creation and annihilation of quanta (or `particles'). The non-relativistic theory does not have this feature.
    The framework in which quantum mechanics and special relativity are successfully reconciled is called quantum field theory. It is based on three basic principles: two of them, of course, are quantum mechanics and special relativity. The third one, which I wish to emphasize, is the postulate that elementary particles are point-like objects of zero intrinsic size. In practice, they are smeared over a region of space due to quantum effects, but their descripton in the basic equations is as mathematical points.
    Now the general principles on which quantum field theory are based actually allow for many different consistent theories to be constructed. (The consistency has not been established with mathematical rigour, but this is not a concern for most physicists.)

    Unified field theory is sometimes called the Theory of Everything (TOE, for short): the long-sought means of tying together all known phenomena to explain the nature and behavior of all matter and energy in existence. In physics, a field refers to an area under the influence of some force, such as gravity or electricity, for example. A unified field theory would reconcile seemingly incompatible aspects of various field theories to create a single comprehensive set of equations. Such a theory could potentially unlock all the secrets of nature and make a myriad of wonders possible, including such benefits as time travel and an inexhaustible source of clean energy, among many others. According to Michio Katu, a theoretical physicist at City College, City University of New York, those in pursuit of a unified field theory seek "an equation an inch long that would allow us to read the mind of God." James Clerk Maxwell proposed the first field theory, for electromagnetism, in the middle of the 1800s.     In 1996, decided to put this translation on the web because I thought it was strange that more than 40 years after the death of the man who is considered the greatest genious in physics, only a few of his later publications have been translated. However, this is not a professional translation. It was performed with the mediocre English knowledge of a scientist and the help of the online-dictionary leo.org Below you find the original and the translation of two reports 'Sitzungsberichte der Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Klasse', the original of three further reports, and one paper in 'Mathematische Annalen' that summarizes the content of the reports. These papers will not be easy to read for the beginner. You may consider further writings on my page on Differential Geometry and Dislocations and try to understand what torsion means or have a look at some Literature on torsion and differential geometry related to Einstein's attempt.

High-Spin Versus Low-Spin Octahedral Complexes At almost exactly the same time that chemists were developing the valence-bond model for coordination complexes, physicists such as Hans Bethe, John Van Vleck, and Leslie Orgel were developing an alternative known as crystal field theory . This theory tried to describe the effect of the electrical field of neighboring ions on the energies of the valence orbitals of an ion in a crystal. Crystal field theory was developed by considering two compounds: manganese(II) oxide, MnO, and copper(I) chloride, CuCl. Octahedral Crystal Fields Each Mn ion in manganese(II) oxide is surrounded by six O ions arranged toward the corners of an octahedron, as shown in the figure below. MnO is therefore a model for an octahedral complex in which a transition-metal ion is coordinated to six ligands.     Abstract:
    Is there an Edge of Chaos, and if so, can evolution take us to it? Many issues have to be settled before any definitive answer can be given. For quantitative work, we need a good measure of complexity. We suggest that convergence time is an appropriate and useful measure. In the case of cellular automata, one of the advantages of the convergence-time measure is that it can be analytically approximated using a generalized mean field theory. In this paper we demonstrate that the mean field theory for cellular automata can 1) reduce the variablity of behavior inherent in the -parameter approach, 2) approximate convergence time, and 3) drive an evolutionary process toward increasing complexity.
