    General Description
    Here is the course schedule which gives the specific topics to be covered and corresponding section numbers in the book. There is also a very terse course description contained in the SLU Undergraduate Catalog (PDF format). The course prerequisite is a passing grade in MT A114 or two years of high school algebra.
    Textbook Information
    The required text for the course is Finite Mathematics and its Applications , 7th ed., by Larry J. Goldstein, David I. Schneider, and Martha J. Siegel. Students can get the text from the SLU Bookstore
    Homework and Exams
    There will be some homework problems every week, unless otherwise indicated. Here is the latest homework assignment. You are encouraged to discuss homework problems with your classmates, but each student should prepare his or her own set of solutions. academic honesty with which you should be familiar.
    Getting help
    • The Mathematics Department offers help sessions run by graduate students for all lower division courses. These begin around the second week of classes, and are held in Ritter Hall 23, Mondays 11-1, Tuesdays 9-2, Wednesdays 11-2, Thursdays 9-2, and Fridays 11-12. This is a great (and underutilized) resource for math students!

    Finite Mathematics: An Applied Approach, 8th ed. by Mizrahi and Sullivan
    The University of Iowa catalog course description This course is especially useful for students in the social sciences. The course covers: (1) solving systems of linear equations using matrix techniques, (2) optimization problems (optimize a linear function subject to "linear" constraints) using "geometric" and "simplex" methods, (3) counting techniques (permutations, combinations), (4) elementary probability theory, and (5) elementary game theory (find optimal strategies for two-person games). Time permitting, additional topics are covered. Examples and applications of these techniques are taken from diverse areas. Each week there are three hours of lecture sessions taught by faculty as well as one hour of a small discussion session taught by a TA. Grades are based on several in-class exams and a cumulative final exam. This policy depends on the instructor, who may also count homework in grading.     Richard Dedekind, b. Oct. 6, 1831, d. Feb. 12, 1916, was a German mathematician known for his study of CONTINUITY and definition of the real numbers in terms of Dedekind "cuts"; his analysis of the nature of number and mathematical induction, including the definition of finite and infinite sets; and his influential work in NUMBER THEORY, particularly in algebraic number fields. Among his most notable contributions to mathematics were his editions of the collected works of Peter DIRICHLET, Carl GAUSS, and Georg Riemann. Dedekind's study of Dirichlet's work led to his own study of algebraic number fields, as well as his introduction of ideals.
