  • Functional Analysis - Dave Rusin; The Mathematical Atlas
A short article designed to provide an introduction to functional analysis, which views the big picture in differential equations, for example, thinking of a differential operator as a linear map on a large set of functions. Thus this area becomes the study of (infinite-dimensional) vector spaces with some kind of metric or other structure, including ring structures (Banach algebras and C-* algebras for example). Appropriate generalizations of measure, derivatives, and duality also belong to this area. 1. Introduction
The feasibility of creating records describing multiple manifestations of the same work has been a recurring topic of discussion within the MARC community for more than a decade, but to date there has been no effective resolution of the issue. Within the last few years, the issue has become even more pressing as a result of the increasing use of digital technologies both to create original materials and to convert existing materials to digital form, and the resulting proliferation of alternative manifestations of the same content.

    Introduction
The purpose is to provide a collection of examples in functional analysis and operator theory as a small encyclopedic for graduate students and all readers who are interested in the subject. These examples are interesting on their own and some of them are culled from different sources. I apologize for any default and cordially ask you to send any ideas, comments, corrections or supplements completing this page. I am proud to thank Professor N. Christopher Phillips for his kindness and helpful suggestions.

    • April 4, 2003 , Friday - 14h00 (Room P 5):
Frank-Olme Speck "On a Class of Wedge Diffraction Problems Posted by Erhard Meister" Abstract. A class of canonical wedge diffraction problems was formulated by E. Meister in 1986 and subsequently treated by an operator theoretical approach in various publications of his research group. Certain subclasses of those problems, recognized of being unsolved, are subject of the present talk. Some of them are now successfully attacked by the help of (a) operator relations, (b) a new factorization approach for convolution type operators with symmetry, and (c) the method of minimal normalization in Sobolev spaces. Several gaps of the existing theory are filled, new problems are recognized reflecting the challenges of the present state of the art. The talk is mainly based upon joint recent work with L. Castro and F.S. Teixeira.

Functional Analysis Carl Jung developed psychological types based on the four functions (Feeling, Thinking, iNtuition and Sensing) and the two attitudes (Extraversion and Introversion). (There is, in my experience, a good deal of confusion, especially among those without some grounding in psychological type, about the nature of these functions and attitudes. The words don't necessarily mean what we expect them to mean, and caution should be used in applying common usage to these terms if this system is to be of value in the understanding of basic temperaments.) In this system there are eight basic types , each designated by its dominant (defining, controlling, pre-eminent) function: Symbol Jungian Type Myers-Briggs Types Fe Extraverted Feeling ESFJ ENFJ Fi Introverted Feeling ISFP INFP Ne Extraverted Intuition ENFP ENTP Ni Introverted Intuition INFJ INTJ Se Extraverted Sensing ESFP ESTP Si Introverted Sensing ISFJ ISTJ Te Extraverted Thinking ESTJ ENTJ Ti Introverted Thinking ISTP INTP

You select (Type by Type) any of 256 possible combinations of types to see a diagram of the functional relationship and a description of one of 16 families of type relationships. How do INFPs and ESFJs relate? Select these types and read about Cohort relationships. ENTJ and ISFP? Select them to see the graphic inner workings of the fascinating Anima encounter. This electronic book also contains profiles of the 16 psychological types and a functional analysis of each type, based on Jung’s function-attitude pairs. What makes us tick? Functional analysis descriptions contain insights into the inner workings of preferred functions and attitudes in the innate hierarchical orderings that exist in our various human psyches. This conference will honor the memory of our friend and colleague Yaki Sternfeld, who passed away on March 24, 2001, after a long and heroic struggle. The conference is sponsored by the University of Haifa and the Center for Mathematical Sciences at the Technion, and will be held on both campuses during May 19-22, 2002. The conference will deal with geometric and topological aspects of functional analysis, including topics related to some (but certainly not all) of Yaki's research interests (dimension theory, fixed point theory, nonlinear functional analysis, spaces of continuous functions). Scientific Committee : Yoav Benyamini, Joram Lindenstrauss, Edward Odell, Aleksander Pelczynski, Shlomo Reisner, Haskell Rosenthal and Henryk Torunczyk. Organizing Committee : Jonathan Arazy, Yoav Benyamini, Yehoram Gordon, Victor Harnik, Simeon Reich and Shlomo Reisner. For further information :
