International Game Theory Review (IGTR)
Rapid developments in technology, communication, industrial organization, economic integration, political reforms and international trade have made it increasingly imperative to recognize the causes and effects of strategic interdependencies and interactions. A strategic approach to decision-making is crucial in areas such as trade negotiations, foreign and domestic investments, capital accumulation, pollution control, market integration, regional cooperation, development and implementation of new technology, arms control, international resource extraction, network sharing, and competitive marketing. More What's New Professor John Nash of Princeton University (Nobel Laureate 1994) will join the IGTR Editorial Board as an Associate Editor. Description
Evolutionary game theory studies equilibria of games played by an populations of players, where the "fitness" of the players derives from the success each player has in playing the game. It provides a tool for describing situations where a number of agents interact, where agents might change the strategy they follow at the end of any particular interaction. Why do we care about this? Many people have attempted to use traditional game theory to analyze economic or political problems, which typically involve a large population of agents interacting. However, traditional game theory is a "static"
theory, which reduces its usefulness in analyzing these very sorts of situations. Evolutionary game theory improves upon traditional game theory by providing a dynamics describing how the population will change over time. The simplest evolutionary game theoretic models are based upon the the replicator dynamics . Although a fruitful place to start, the replicator dynamics make a number of assumptions which can reasonably be questioned for human populations. Namely:

A daily jolt of inspiration January 2002 Game Theory The banner ad is dead. Long live the advergame! America's addiction to video and computer games is leading the way to a new advertising medium with astounding click-through rates, play times, and peer-to-peer potential. What's your high score? by Anni Layne Rodgers When Bill Gates recently announced that Microsoft's Xbox decimated industry sales records during its 2001 debut, he surprised very few tech analysts, hard-core gamers, or indulgent parents. Going for $299 a pop, the Xbox generated $450 million in sales on 1.5 million consoles during the final six weeks of the worst year on memory. And that's not even factoring in the sales of games like Halo and Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2, which retail for $49.99 each ... when they aren't on back order. So why, when unemployment is reaching a seven-year high and consumer spending is still faltering, are Americans doling out so much cash, so fervently, for

Game theory , the study of rational behavior broken down into strategic decisions, is all about equations. If you do this, I will decide to do this, and then you will probably decide to do that expressed in the language of math. But the central paradox of game theory is that it seeks to mathematically explain decisions that are frequently made in the grip of intense emotion. Game theory sets out to analyze and explain rational behavior. Plants, evolving mutely as they do, are rational. People, who screw up, break hearts and move markets, aren't always. The difficulty with game theory is that its attempt to explain everything in one unified theory results in a patchwork of math that is possibly too ugly to be elegantly unified, and one that cannot possibly explain everything.
