Abstract: Emerging high speed Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks (B-ISDN) will carry traffic for services such as video-on-demand and video teleconferencing that require resource reservation along the path on which the traffic is sent. As a result, such networks will need effective admission control algorithms. The simplest approach is to use greedy admission control; in other words, accept every resource request that can be physically accommodated. However, in the context of... (Update)

Available from the textbook annex. Homework: Homework will be assigned on a (mostly) weekly basis, and will usually be due on Wednesdays. Exams: There will be one midterm exam in class on November 4, and one final exam, on December 9. Problem Session: Mondays 2:30 - 3:20 in LGRT 1322. Grades: Homework will count for 30% of the final grade, the midterm also counts for 30%, and the final counts for 40%. Course goals: The language of basic topology, commonly called "point-set topology", is important to many fields of mathematics, including differential geometry, algebraic topology, and many areas of analysis. We will learn all the basic definitions that allow you to say interesting things in the language, together with lots of examples to help develop intuition about what the defintions really mean. Although some examples in topology are "exotic", and are mainly useful to remind you that your intution doesn't tell you the whole story, we will spend more time on examples that have real mathematical content. Topics: We will cover the most important topics from Chapters 2,3,4,and 7 of Munkres. Hopefully we will have time to start chapter 9 (the fundamental group) before the semester ends.

    General topology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. In mathematics general topology or point set topology is that branch of topology which studies elementary properties of topological spaces and structures defined on them. Other main branches of topology are algebraic topology and differential topology It's in general topology that basic notions, such as: are defined and theorems about them are proved. Other more advanced notions also appear, but are usually related directly to these fundamental concepts, without reference to other branches of mathematics.

If you are taking an introductory Topology course, I recommend using this book. It is a little old, and some of the problems are not solved, but it will offer you an advantage when using your class text. You should use Lipschutzs book together with REAs Topology Problem Solver to give you full study advantage when taking on this most difficult subject. With some moderate study, you should do better on your assignements! GENERAL TOPOLOGY
Course Description Continuity, connectedness, and compactness are treated as basic concepts and developed for general topological spaces. The Tychonoff theorem, Urysohn's lemma and the Tietze extension theorem, together with applications, comprise about half the course. The topology of metric spaces, including paracompactness and the Baire category theorem, is developed. Problems for the written portion of the departmental qualifying exams are composed from the above material. If time permits, topics involving compactly generated topologies are discussed for use in homotopy theory. Some instructors may treat topics from algebraic topology like the fundamental group and covering spaces. This page was last revised on July 29, 2002.

From the contents: Open sets, Neighbourhoods, Closed Sets; Continuous Functions; Subspaces, Quotient Spaces; Product of Topological Spaces; Open mappings and closed mappings; Filters; Limits; Hausdorff Spaces and Regular spaces; Compact Spaces and Locally Compact Spaces; Proper mappings; Connectedness; Exercises; Uniform Structures; Topological Groups; Real Number; Exercises This book is a reprint of the 1966 edition. Starting from the definitions, it gives a thorough treatment of the basic (and often non-trivial) aspects of general topology. In chapter I, general topological notions are introduced (including filters). Hausdorff, regular, compact, locally compact spaces are studied, as well as proper mappings and connectedness properties. Chapter II deals with uniform structures, complete spaces and the relationship between compactness and completeness. Chapter III treats topological groups, transposing into a topological setting the main aspects of group theory. Chapter IV applies the previous notions to the construction and study of the field of real numbers: real-valued functions and semi-continuity properties are defined, infinites sums and products are studied, and the usual expansions of real numbers given. The book includes a historical note and numerous interesting and useful exercises.
