The imagery in this library is derived from ground-based archaeological remote sensing projects conducted by the Archeo-Imaging Lab of the University of Arkansas. These projects utilize a suite of near-surface geophysical prospecting methods including ground penetrating radar, proton magnetometry, fluxgate gradiometry, electrical resistivity, and electromagnetic induction methods. Included in this reference library is a selection of some of the more interesting results. Best viewed at screen resolutions greater than 800 x 600 Geophysical survey methods are revolutionizing the conduct of North American archeology. MESSAGE FROM THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR Image 1: Pu'u O'o lava pond on Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii, 1999. By Segall Research Group. Geophysics is the branch of earth science which employs physical measurements and mathematical models to explore and analyze the structure and dynamics of the solid Earth and similar bodies and their fluid envelopes. The undergraduate and graduate programs are designed to provide (1) a background of fundamentals in science, and (2) courses in geophysics to coordinate these fundamentals with principles of geophysics. The program leading to the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Geophysics permits many electives and a high degree of flexibility for each individual student. Graduate programs give specialized training for professional work in exploration, research, and education, and lead to degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy. The Department of Geophysics is housed in the Ruth Wattis Mitchell Earth Sciences building. It has numerous research facilities among which are a state-of-the art broadband seismic recording station, many computers, high-pressure-and-temperature rock properties and deformation laboratories and various instruments for geophysical field measurements.

This course was the first Earth Science course on the World Wide Web, premiering in the Spring of 1993. Since that time the course has gone through many revisions, and this latest revision of the home page is intended to give a fresher look to the site.
Please note that IMSA Geophysics has not been taught since 1999, so it is likely that some of the links may be out of date. Hopefully this course will be taught in the upcoming academic year, in which case I will have more time to dedicate to updating the site. This course and web page developed and maintained by Mark A.
