"This is a book about the interplay between algebraic topology and the theory of infinite discrete groups. I have written it for three kinds of readers. First, it is for graduate students who have had an introductory course in algebraic topology and who need a bridge from common knowledge to the current research literature in geometric and homological group theory. Secondly, I am writing for group theorists who would like to know more about the topological side of their subject but who have been too long away from topology. Thirdly, I hope the book will be useful to manifold topologists, both high- and low-dimensional, as a reference source for basic material on proper homotopy and homology..."

Higher Dimensional Group Theory

Aims
The term Higher Dimensional Group Theory was introduced in . The aim of this paper is to give a broad account of the background to the idea without much technical detail, so that it can be read by a wide audience. The technical side is contained in the references given throughout, and the subject can be explored in the accompanying bibliography on 'Publications on groupoids and non linear homological and homotopical algebra' . This was initially built up for a research grant application, and then was directed at publications which referred to or were related to work at Bangor in these areas. It is now a suitable time to extend it, and suggestions would be welcomed. I am developing a page on one aspect, the non abelian tensor product of groups . It is interesting that this construction, which can be seen as basic in group theory because of its relation to commutator theory, is also but a fragment of the general approach in terms of higher dimensional group theory. In some places I have been speculative on the potential for this theory, on the grounds that this has to be done to make big conceptual gains or leaps, and to decide in what direction the theory might go next. These speculations also give some idea of the character of the theory.

    What is Schur?
    Schur is a stand alone C program for interactively calculating properties of Lie groups and symmetric functions. Schur has been designed to answer questions of relevance to a wide range of problems of special interest to chemists, mathematicians and physicists - particularly for persons who need specific knowledge relating to some aspect of Lie groups or symmetric functions and yet do not wish to be encumbered with complex algorithms. The objective of Schur is to supply results with the complexity of the algorithms hidden from view so that the user can effectively use Schur as a scratch pad, obtaining a result and then using that result to derive new results in a fully interactive manner. Schur can be used as a tool for calculating branching rules, Kronecker products, Casimir invariants, dimensions, plethysms, S-function operations, Young diagrams and their hook lengths etc.

    Adventures in Group Theory is a tour through the algebra of several "permutation puzzles." Although the main focus is on the Rubik's Cube, several other puzzles are explored to a lesser degree. Joyner pulls together a great deal of information about the mathematics of the Rubik's Cube from various sources and mixes it with a lot of algebra. (And I mean a lot!) The book has the following layout: Chapter 1 An introduction to Boolean algebra, logic, and the basic moves of the Rubik's cube (using the Singmaster notation: U D L R F B). Chapter 2 Functions, Cartesian products, vector spaces, matrices, determinants, relations and equivalence classes, and some basic combinatorics. Chapter 3 Permutations, signs of permutations, permutation matrices (a little on permutations of the edges of the Rubik's cube), and the symmetry groups S n Chapter 4 Permutation puzzles are introduced: Sam Loyd's 15 puzzle , the Hockeypuck puzzle , the Rainbow Masterball , the Pyraminx , the 2x2 and 3x3 Rubik's Cube , the Skewb , the Megaminx , and several others.
