October 22, 1999 CRSC hosts workshop on applied, industrial math
The Center for Research in Scientific Computation (CRSC) at NC State University last week hosted a regional workshop that provided a forum on the need for and role of applied mathematicians in industry. The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Southeast Regional Mathematics in Industry Workshop ran Oct. 10-12 at the McKimmon Center. It featured presentations on opportunities for mathematicians in industry, on the experiences of current math students and recent graduates, and on applied math initiatives in undergraduate and graduate programs. Panel discussions focused on mathematics in medicine, imaging science, mathematical finance, optimal design, and optimization in the airline industry. The regional meeting was the fourth in a series across the United States focusing on mathematics in industry. Dr. H.T. Tran, associate professor of mathematics and member of the CRSC, headed the local organizing committee for the workshop. "NC State was chosen for this workshop in recognition for being the home of one of the nation’s leading programs in industrial mathematics," said Dr. H. Thomas Banks, director of the CRSC and Drexel Professor of Mathematics.

Industrial Mathematical and Statistical Modeling Workshop for Graduate Students July 21-July 29, 2003 Center for Research in Scientific Computation, Raleigh, NC 27695
The objective
of the workshop is to expose graduate students in mathematics, engineering, and statistics to challenging and exciting real-world problems arising in industrial and government laboratory research. The students also learn about the team approach to problem solving. Institutions/Companies presenting projects this year are: Battelle Memorial Institute Federal Reserve Bank (Chicago) Jet Propulsion Laboratory MCNC-Research and Development Institute ... National Institute of Statistical Sciences The format : The students are divided into six-member teams to collaborate on industrial projects presented by experienced scientists and engineers. The corresponding problems are not the kind of academic exercises often considered in classrooms. The challenges they raise typically require fresh new insight for both formulation and solution. During the workshop, each group is mentored by both the problem presenter and a faculty adviser.
