This option is meant for those students who intend to enter the job market upon graduation. Students who intend to use their mathematical skills should choose a minor in science or engineering in consultation with an advisor. Students choosing this option and an appropriate minor, or double major, can also go on to graduate school in a field of science or engineering. THE CORE COURSES:

If you solve until for t = 10 the solution will be completely flat. Based on the code fragment below solve the following problems involving fourier series.
1. Take an initial function which is a combination of cosines with different amplitudes. Compute the fourier coefficients and see that you get the right numbers. Use the coefficients to rebuild the function (i.e. f(x) = sum A(i) cos(i x) ) and check that the error is small.
2. Repeat problem 1 with the step function, centered at the origin.
3. We can solve the heat equation by transforming the coefficiencts of the fourier series from A(n) to exp(-n^2 t) A(n). Use this transformation to go forward from the dose D(x) which is a step function to the given exposure. Compare your answer to your solution of hte (forward) heat equation by finite differences, Friedman 3.3.3 (you may use my solution below if you like).

This concentration includes courses that emphasize the theory and application of probability, statistics, and mathematical modeling. This concentration also provides excellent preparation for the student interested in starting a career in the actuarial profession. The curriculum for applied mathematics includes core mathematics courses that are common to both concentrations. These courses comprise about one quarter of the total credits in the program. IMS students can select jobs from many opportunities. Those more interested in the statistics side of the degree will be able to seek jobs as statisticians. About one-fourth of those employed as statisticians work in the federal government in such organizations as the Departments of Commerce, Agriculture, and Health and Human Services. Outside of the government, most statisticians are employed in private industry, especially in the insurance, pharmaceutical, health, manufacturing, research and testing services, and computer and data processing industries. Those more interested in the applied mathematics side of the degree who want to work outside of academics are usually part of interdisciplinary teams that are often divided evenly among mathematicians, computer scientists, and engineers with a smaller proportion of physical scientists. Applied mathematicians and statisticians have found employment in organizations such as:

DENVER (Feb. 17, 2003)The numerous uses of numbers in a variety of industrial settings will be examined at "Math Inside! An Industrial View," a symposium from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. MST (10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. EST) Monday, Feb. 17, during the American Association for the Advancement of Science's annual meeting in the Colorado Convention Center, Denver. The symposium was organized by Fadil Santosa, a professor in the University of Minnesota's Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications, and Brenda Dietrich, head of the mathematical science department, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. "Mathematics and mathematicians play important roles in product development and decision-making in industry, even though only a small percentage of mathematics Ph.D.'s work in industry," said Santosa. The symposium will give attendees a taste of what sorts of problems lead companies to hire mathematicians. Santosa, an expert in photonics, works on simulation and design of optical devices. He will open the session with an introduction to the industrial programs at the Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications. A list of other speakers and their topics follows.

    Estimation Problems (recall the Tank and capture-recapture problems from last term) Least-Squares/Regression Problems (where a dependent variable is fit to other independent variables for summarizing a relationship and/or for predicting the value of the dependent variable given particular values of the dependent variables)

Instead, the four teachers were preparing to make industrial math and science interesting to females and minorities. The group ended up at GE through the Mathematics in Industry Institute, which is run by Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The weeklong program matches 80 educators with WPI professors and career professionals to learn ways of motivating female and minority students with business and industrial applications of mathematics.
