Fourier series (and power series) are important examples of useful series of functions. Applications of Fourier series may be found in many diverse theoretical and applied areas. The same holds for integral transforms. The Fourier and Laplace transforms are the best known of these transforms and are prototypes of the general integral transforms. This book was originally prepared, in Hebrew, for the course "Fourier Series and Integral Transformations" given by the Department of Mathematics at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel. This course is intended for students of the Department of Electrical Engineering, but also includes students of the Physics and Computer Science Departments. It is a one semester course (14 weeks), given during the third semester of studies, with two hours of lectures and a one hour problem session each week. The material presented in this book is an expanded, and hopefully polished, version of the notes for this course.

Multilevel Evaluation of Integral Transforms with Asymptotically Smooth Kernels
    A. Brandt, C. H. Venner
Abstract. Multilevel algorithms developed for the fast evaluation of integral transforms and the solution of the corresponding integral and integrodifferential equations rely on smoothness properties of the discrete kernel (matrix) and thereby on grid uniformity (see [A. Brandt and A.A. Lubrecht, J. Comput. Phys. , 90 (1990), pp. 348370], [C.H. Venner and A.A. Lubrecht, Multigrid Methods IV: Proc. 4th European Multigrid Conference, Amsterdam 1993, P. Hemker and P. Wesseling, eds., Birkhäuser, Basel, 1994]). However, in actual applications, e.g., in contact mechanics, in many cases a substantial increase of efficiency can be obtained using nonuniform grids, since the solution is smooth in large parts of the domain with large gradients that occur only locally. In this paper a new algorithm is presented which relies on the smoothness of the continuum kernel only, independent of the grid configuration. This will facilitate the introduction of local refinements, wherever needed. Also, the evaluations will generally be faster; for a d -dimensional problem only O s d ) operations per gridpoint are needed if s is the order of discretization. The algorithm is tested using a one-dimensional model problem with logarithmic kernel. Results are presented using both a second- and a fourth-order discretization. For testing purposes and to compare with results presented in [A. Brandt and A.A. Lubrecht

Semester (view timetable) Contact Thirty-six lectures (three per week) and up to 12 practice classes (one per week) Subject Description This subject introduces methods of evaluating real integrals using complex analysis; and develops methods for evaluating and inverting Fourier, Laplace and Mellin transforms, with selected applications including summing series and computing asymptotic series. Students should learn what an asymptotic expansion is and how it provides approximations; how to use Watson's lemma and the methods of Laplace, stationary phase and steepest descents to evaluate asymptotic expressions; and how to find asymptotic solutions to ordinary differential equations. This subject demonstrates a range of important and useful techniques and their power in solving problems in applied mathematics. Complex analysis topics include contour integration, branch cuts, and evaluation of integrals. Integral transforms topics include wave equation, Fourier series; Fourier transform, Fourier integral theorem, convolution, applications; Laplace transform, inversion, examples; application to ordinary differential equations; convolution and applications; and Mellin transform examples. Asymptotics topics include asymptotic expansions, application of Mellin transform; Laplace's method for integrals, method of steepest descent, applications; method of stationary phase, examples; and WKB method for ordinary differential equations, asymptotic matching.
