[Year 2000 Readiness Disclosure] LAPACK is written in Fortran77 and provides routines for solving systems of simultaneous linear equations, least-squares solutions of linear systems of equations, eigenvalue problems, and singular value problems. The associated matrix factorizations (LU, Cholesky, QR, SVD, Schur, generalized Schur) are also provided, as are related computations such as reordering of the Schur factorizations and estimating condition numbers. Dense and banded matrices are handled, but not general sparse matrices. In all areas, similar functionality is provided for real and complex matrices, in both single and double precision. If you're uncertain of the LAPACK routine name to address your application's needs, check out the

Introduction
Linear algebra, sometimes disguised as matrix theory, considers sets and functions which preserve linear structure. In practice this includes a very wide portion of mathematics! Thus linear algebra includes axiomatic treatments, computational matters, algebraic structures, and even parts of geometry; moreover, it provides tools used for analyzing differential equations, statistical processes, and even physical phenomena.
History
See for example the Vector space and Matrix theory pages from the St. Andrews History files. Here is a paper on Hermann Grassmann and the Creation of Linear Algebra . Further reading:

  • M.J. Crowe: A History of Vector Analysis, U Notre Dame Press, 1967, reprinted by Dover, 1985.
Applications and related fields
In the accompanying diagram the reader might observe a few clusters of related fields, showing both the many parts of linear algebra and the related fields in which many of these themes are extended and applied.

Linear algebra, sometimes disguised as matrix theory, considers sets and functions which preserve linear structure. We present a unified approach for expressing high performance numerical linear algebra routines for a class of dense and sparse matrix formats and shapes. As with the Standard Template Library [7], we explicitly separate algorithms from data structures through the use of generic programming techniques. We conclude that such an approach does not hinder high performance. On the contrary, writing portable high performance codes is actually enabled with such an approach because the performance... http://www.evergreen.edu/biophysics/home.htm
Bioanalytical chemistry research at The Evergreen State College is conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Jeff Kelly and Dr. Clyde Barlow. Together, they have been developing physiological procedures and instruments for research and clinical use since 1984. Their work is funded mainly by the National Institutes of Health under the set-aside program Small Business Innovation Research . The lab motto is "If it were easy, it would already have been done." Students can gain valuable laboratory research experience while working on a variety of projects in the fields of physiology, spectroscopy, computer interfacing, image processing, applied linear algebra, and organic chemistry synthesis.
The laboratory staff possesses many years of experience working with optical detection of fluorescence and reflectance, electronic design, instrument construction and the development of software for data analysis and computer control of instrumentation.
