SCORE Mathematics California's Mathematics Standards 8-12 MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS This discipline combines many of the trigonometric, geometric, and algebraic techniques needed to prepare students for the study of calculus and strengthens their conceptual understanding of problems and mathematical reasoning in solving problems. These standards take a functional point of view toward those topics. The most significant new concept is that of limits. Mathematical Analysis is often combined with a course in trigonometry or perhaps with one in linear algebra to make a yearlong pre-calculus course. Students are familiar with, and can apply, polar coordinates and vectors in the plane. In particular, they can translate between polar and rectangular coordinates and can interpret polar coordinates and vectors graphically. Students are adept at the arithmetic of complex numbers. They can use the trigonometric form of complex numbers and understand that a function of a complex variable can be viewed as a function of two real variables. They know the proof of DeMoivre's theorem. Students can give proofs of various formulas by using the technique of mathematical induction.

The aim of this 10-day course is to instruct young mathematicians in topics involving mathematical analysis of hydrodynamics. The conference takes the form of a series of courses (each course being made up of between 2 and 4 one-hour lectures), the courses being structured so that the more basic material is presented during the first week, leading to more advanced lectures in the second week. The courses are supplemented by single research-level talks on recent advances.

    Mathematical Analysis for Reservoir Models

    Abstract. In the first part of this paper, the mathematical analysis is presented in detail for the single-phase, miscible displacement of one fluid by another in a porous medium. It is shown that initial boundary value problems with various boundary conditions for this miscible displacement possess a weak solution under physically reasonable hypotheses on the data. In the second part of this paper, it is proven how the analysis can be extended to two-phase fluid flow and transport equations in a porous medium. The flow equations are written in a fractional flow formulation so that a degenerate elliptic-parabolic partial differential system is produced for a global pressure and a saturation. This degenerate system is coupled to a parabolic transport equation which models the concentration of one of the fluids. The analysis here does not utilize any regularized problem; a weak solution is obtained as a limit of solutions to discrete time problems. Key words.

    Our research interests in the area of mathematical analysis are loosely connected by the study of particular classes of operators on function spaces. These classes can be roughly grouped as elliptic operators, integral operators, positive operators and unitary operators. Elliptic Operators The theory of elliptic partial differential operators, both linear and non-linear, includes such topics as existence and uniqueness of solutions of boundary-value problems involving such operators, and the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenvalues of linear elliptic operators, typically the Schroedinger operator with real or complex potential. A natural background to such work is the study of Sobolev spaces and the various embeddings associated with them. There are a number of problems in this area: the effects of the regularity of the boundary; the existence of extension operators; and the entropy and approximation numbers associated with bounded linear maps acting from one Banach space to another. The last are intimately related with compactness and the eigenvalues of suitable maps. Estimation of these numbers gives information about eigenvalues; this technique also works in estimating the eigenvalues of integral operators.

    Return to start of tour Up to The Divisions of Mathematics Analysis looks carefully at the results obtained in calculus and related areas. One might characterize algebra and geometry as the search for elegant conclusions from small sets of axioms; in analysis on the other hand the measure of success is more frequently the ability to hone a tool which could be applied throughout science. Thus in particular, most of the calculations are done with the real numbers or complex numbers being implicitly understood. Mathematical Analysis includes many of the MSC primary headings, a large portion of the mathematics literature, and much of the most directly applicable mathematics. Perhaps, then, it is appropriate to subdivide this topic; although schemes for this subdivision are not very standard, we may identify five neighborhoods in the "MathMap", shown here in varying shades of green.
