Major research interest. The structure of membrane proteins in general and the calcium transporting atpase in particular. Monkeys ape Molecules. Virus coats, muscle fibres, mitotic spindles and many other regular biologi cal structures are assembled from multiple copies of protein molecules, linked toget her by specific bonds. Protein molecules are inherently asymmetric and it is difficu lt to represent their interactions using regular shapes (spheres or ellipsoids). The monkey provides a large scale unit, which because of its asymmetry and the many pot ential links, can simulate the geometrical relationships within complex structures a nd can illuminate some general principles of symmetry. Plastic monkeys can be joined in pairs in over eighty different ways (Nature, 219, 413, (1968)). The links between them can be either asymmetric (A) or symmetric (S).Any pair can be used as a nucleus for further growth. If the first link is asy mmetric (A), it joins a site X on the first monkey to a site Y on the second and lea ves a spare X site on the second monkey and a Y site on the first, which can be used to add further monkeys and so generate a simple helix from a single type of A link. Asymmetric links can also be used to make rings with differing upper and lower surfac es. If instead of linking X to Y we link X to the X site of another monkey, the m onkeys will be joined by a symmetrically and no further growth can occur unless a new kink Z is introduced, which in turn may be either asymmetric or symmetric

Leah Edelstein-Keshet President, SMB (outgoing) and Leon Glass President, SMB (incoming) Dear SMB members, This issue of the SMB newsletter is being edited and assembled by Denise Kirschner , who very kindly agreed to take over the project despite her recent move, and a heavy workload. Thank you Denise ! August, 1997 is almost here. It is time to plan for our annual meeting (See details, this newsletter). It is also time for a "changing of the guard": Leon Glass , our current president elect will be inaugurated at this year's SMB meeting. It is hard to summarize all the SMB activities in a short space of this letter, but here are the main points: We are gradually becoming more fully electronic (as this newsletter and SMB home page demonstrate). We have several new initiatives ongoing: the newsletter has been placed on a stricter schedule, with three issues per year and target dates of January 1, June 1, and Sept 1. (We still ask for donations of material, editorials, announcements, and other news. We would like to open this forum to greater participation by members). The Busenburg Memorial Funds have now been applied towards student travel, and this year should see students reaping the benefits of these and the Landhal travel funds to attend our annual meeting. The Okubo Fund for scientific Excellence is growing. We hope to award periodic prizes from the interest earned from this fund. A committee consisting of Lee Segel, Simon Levin, and Don Ludwig has been appointed to oversee this process. We are involved in negotiations with Elsevier, and other potential publishers of our official research Journal, the Bulletin of Mathematical Biology (see

News about the Bulletin of Mathematical Biology
Historical Note about BMB The Bulletin of Mathematical Biology is the official research publication of the Society For Mathematical Biology . BMB was originally called the Bulletin of Mathematical Biophysics when it was founded by Nicholas Rashevsky prior to 1972. When Rashevsky died, Mrs. Rashevsky transferred the ownership to Herb Landahl, who subsequently transferred it to SMB. Originally, BMB focused on abstract and theoretical work. Since Lee Segel took over as editor, in 1984, the emphasis has shifted to a greater biologically-relevant content, at the interface of theoretical and experimental biology. Many members of the Society for Mathematical Biology take for granted the arrival of the six issues of the Bulletin of Mathematical Biology every year. This inexpensive and convenient research journal keeps us current, and brings many interesting and informative articles directly to our desks. The SMB membership fee of US $50 for full members pays $36 to the BMB publisher, Elsevier. Only $14 from each regular member is returned to the Society. For students, who get membership to SMB at the low rate of US $25, this journal is a particular bargain, as it is subsidized by the Society: Each student membership is topped up by $11 from SMB funds to bring the journal subscription to our young members. But a price for these unusually low Society fees is exacted ! In recent years, to cover the costs of printing and processing, our publisher has dramatically increased the cost of the Bulletin to institutional subscribers (e.g. libraries), with the result that many libraries have cancelled their subscription. Have you checked your local library for BMB recently? Even if you have a desk-copy of the Bulletin, consider these important reasons for having your institution subscribe: (1) availability of back issues, and ongoing issues to students, colleagues, and others who have interdisciplinary interests. (2) Ensuring the continuity of the archives in Mathematical Biology at a time when this area is becoming more important and timely. (3) Ensuring that the work of your colleagues and members of your profession is made available to as wide a readership as possible.

MATHEMATICAL BIOLOGY

Much of Mathematical Biology involves the analysis of nonlinear difference and differential equations (and systems). Most topics can be approached using graphical techniques easily mastered by upper-division non-majors. These tools provide genuine insight into the application of mathematics in the world around us. The models show how certain processes work in biology and predict outcomes that give insight into biological mechanisms. Much of the course involves the use of eigenvalues in analyzing local behavior, a task within reach of interdisciplinary students. We focus on 2-dimensional systems, but also mention behaviors in higher dimensions. A third aspect of the course is the use of technology: we use some simple TRUE BASIC programs to introduce certain models of population growth (Leslie model), and to discuss the chaotic behavior of logistic models. Students are then taught to use PHASEPLANE, as a tool for finding numerical solutions of differential and discrete systems. This one-semester course includes aspects of chaotic motions, phase-plane analysis, and bifurcation theory, but virtually all of the theoretical material requires only a basic understanding of sophomore calculus.

The Mathematical Biology Research Group (MBRG) is a friendly group of students, postdocs, faculty members and scientists from many different disciplines throughout campus with a common interest in Mathematical Biology. This year we will again invite some prominent mathematical biologists to visit, give a seminar and spend some time interacting with the students. The mission of the group is to foster exciting science by: 1) improving communication between different groups working in a similar area, 2) providing a forum for scientists to present open research projects in a friendly and unobtrusive environment, 3) providing a means for students at any level to learn more about Math Biology and to give them a avenue for starting to work on projects that they find interesting, 4) and having fun! Last semester we studied a few classical mathematical papers, such as the original papers on Kermack and McKendrick and Hodgkin-Huxley. This semester we will look at current papers in the literature that focus on modeling in the Medical Sciences. The group allows members to explore various topics of interest in an informal atmosphere. Topics for discussion are decided on by the people speaking. The MBRG consists of various activities including journal readings, student presentations, seminars, and various mini-lectures. Our group is open to anyone who is interested in learning about Mathematical Biology.
