Often the motivation for the research is a practical problem involving the development and analysis of a mathematical statistical model. In this way the section is in touch with many different areas, e.g.
  • The development of forecasting models, predictive control and modelling of dynamic systems (Time series analysis)
  • General optimal and adaptive control methods (Stochastic control theory)
  • Planning and analysis of tests (Statistical design and analysis of experiments)
  • Models for growth and decomposition of biological systems (Environmental statistics)
  • Random sampling plans and other methods for quality control (Statistical quality control)
  • Analysis of spectral data (Multivariate analysis and classification)

Abstract
The Statistics Program offers the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees for graduate study and research in statistics and probability. Areas of faculty research activity include statistical decision and estimation theory, biostatistics, stochastic modeling, robust and nonparametric inference, semiparametric inference, empirical likelihood, analysis of variance, theory and inference for stochastic processes, stochastic analysis and time series. Students may concentrate in applied or theoretical statistics by selecting an appropriate sequence of courses and a research area to form an individual plan of study. The Program has been designed with sufficient flexibility to accommodate the student's background and interests. The Program also offers students from other disciplines an opportunity to select a variety of statistics courses to supplement their own study.

Introduction
The Institute of Actuarial Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics
Actuarial mathematics
deals with the proper valuation of insurance contracts both in life and nonlife insurance. From statistical data about the risks of various contingencies, inference is made about their probabilities. From knowledge of these probabilities analysis is made on for example what is a safe premium in order to achieve a desired security for the insurance business.
Mathematical statistics is concerned with
(a) Formulation and mathematical analysis of probabilistic models for random phenomena. Research and teaching concern both probability theory per se and particular fields of application. Some such applied fields which have attracted special interest at the Institute in recent years are statistical physics and the spread of epidemics. Probability theory is also basic for the developments in actuarial mathematics and in statistical methodology.
(b) Development and investigation of methods and principles for statistical inference. In this part of the subject properties of statistical methods are studied and efficient methods are searched for making inference from statistical data. Such investigations are typically based on a mathematical model specifying the systematic and random structure of data. This part of the subject also includes the topics of design of experiments and design of sample surveys. Some fields of special interest at the Institute are inference for random processes and the more applied field of

In probability theory, the probabilities of complicated phenomena are derived from known probabilities of simpler events. Stability results which are given by different forms of the strong law of large numbers and the central limit theorem are of special importance. Statistical inference attempts to capture the way correct conclusions can be drawn from imprecise observations. In this case, probability theory plays an important role. Research profile

Introduction
Statistics is the science of obtaining, synthesizing, predicting, and drawing inferences from data. Elementary calculations of mean and standard variation suffice to summarize a large, finite, normally-distributed dataset; the field of Statistics exists since data are not usually so nicely given. If we do not know all the elements of the dataset, we must discuss sampling and experimental design; if the data are not normal we must use other parameters to summarize them, or resort to nonparametric methods; if multiple data are involved, we study the measures of interaction among the variables. Other topics include the study of time-dependent data, and the foundations necessary to avoid ambiguity or paradox. Computational methods (e.g. for curve-fitting) are of particular importance in applications to the sciences and engineering as well as financial and actuarial work.
