IF you teach economics, we invite you to apply participate at the NES Outreach workshops: in ECONOMETRICS - 1-6 July -Veliky Novgorod, 26-31 August - Kishinev PROBABILITY THEORY AND MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS Lectures - Dr. Prof. Serguei Aivazian “Probability theory” (12 lectures) covers the basics of mathematical discipline designed to study the properties of the models that imitate the mechanisms of functioning of real (i.e. social and economic) systems which conditions of life include the inevitability of influence of big number of random variables. The formulated above aim stresses the following notions: multidimensional joint and conditional distributions, the markov and regression models. Part II “Mathematical statistics” (16 lectures) covers the main notions, tools, mathematical methods and models destined to organise the collection, systematisation and analysis of statistic data with the aim of its presentation, interpretation and drawing of scientific and practical conclusion. The special attention in this part is paid to the methods of statistic estimation of the unknown parameters of the model and verification of statistical hypotheses. 4. MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS DEPARTMENT The department was established in October, 1970, headed by B.Grigelionis. The Sector of Random Fields was founded in 1984, headed by D.Surgailis. Initially scientific interests were defined by the problems of Markov sufficient statistics in the theory of the optimal stopping of stochastic processes, that led to the concepts of predictable characteristics of semimartigales and compensators of stochastic point measures, martingale characterisation of stochastic processes, stochastic integral representation of local martingales and non-linear filtering equations. Explicit formulas for local densities, criteria of contiguity and weak convergence of probability measures are also based on the same martingale techniques. special attention was paid to the stochastic processes with values on the manifolds with boundaries. A new trend was determined by the construction and investigation of non-Gausian self-similar stochastic processes and fields as well as polygonal Markov fields. The convergence to self-similar fields appears in stochastic hydrodynamics, statistics, etc. The theory of optimal control of general solutions to stochastic Itô's equations and boundary value problems for the related integer-differential Bellman's equation defined one of the most important areas of the activity of the department.

About
Stat Labs How to Use Stat Labs ... Errata
Stat Labs integrates the theory of statistics with the practice of statistics through a collection of case studies, which we call labs. Each lab introduces a problem, provides some scientific background, suggests investigations for the data, and provides a summary of the theory used in the investigations. Our philosophy of teaching statistics through case studies is described in a recent article appearing in The American Statistician, Vol. 53, No. 4, pp 370-376 We have collected our labs into a text for advanced introductory statistics courses. A sample chapter, Maternal Smoking and Infant Health , can be found at this web site along with ideas on how to use our text in a course. This web site provides the data used in Stat Labs , and answers to our students' frequently asked questions on how to use S-plus and R to analyze these data. To Order: Stat Labs: Mathematical Statistics through Applications can be purchased in paperback from Springer-Verlag for $34.95.

Mathematical Statistics with Mathematica
Colin Rose and Murray D. Smith, 2002, Springer, 481 pp., hardcover, includes two CD-ROMs.
This book and software package present a unified approach for doing mathematical statistics with Mathematica . The book, although it assumes preliminary knowledge of calculus, statistics, and probability, assumes no prior knowledge of Mathematica . The emphasis is on problem solving with less attention paid to the presentation of theorems and their associated proofs, which can be found in traditional texts. The mathStatica software, an add-on to Mathematica , provides a toolset specially designed for doing mathematical statistics. It enables students to solve difficult problems by removing the technical calculations often associated with mathematical statistics. The professional statistician will be able to tackle tricky multivariate distributions, generating functions, inversion theorems, symbolic maximum likelihood estimation, unbiased estimation, and the checking and correcting of textbook formulas. This text would be a useful companion for researchers and students in statistics, econometrics, engineering, physics, psychometrics, economics, finance, biometrics, and the social sciences. The book contains two cross-platform CDs, which run on Windows, Mac OS, Linux, and most Unix platforms. The

Note that the stationary distributions of the Markov chains M and M match the sampling distributions specified in questions (b) and (c) Although the topic of random walks on groups has received much attention (see for example the work of Aldous [1] and Diaconis ) previous authors have been concerned with walks which converge to a uniform distribution. The novel aspect of the current investigation is that the stationary distribution is required to be highly non uniform. We have seen that the stationary distribution of the Markov chain M is appropriate ....

Graduate Training Programme in Mathematical Statistics and Applied Probability
Overview
This programme is a joint RSS EPSRC ESRC initiative aimed at strengthening the mathematical foundations of tomorrow's statistical researchers through a series of courses on the theoretical underpinnings of our subject. The programme will run residential courses consisting of two concurrent intensive modules aimed primarily at first and second year PhD students. Core courses (designed to be repeated every two years) and more specialised courses will be offered and, once fully established, we expect to put on two courses per year, probably one in each of the Summer and Christmas vacations.
The first Course
The first course will be held at Nuffield College Oxford from 22-27th September, 2002. This course will comprise two 10-lecture modules together with examples classes. One module will be given by Alastair Young (Cambridge) on "Likelihood inference" and the other by Nick Bingham (Brunel) on "Probability models". Further information including outline syllabuses and an application form are available here . Electronic applications will be welcome, and should be emailed to Paul Gentry (
