Overview
digital library "A managed environment of multimedia materials in digital form, designed for the benefit of its user population, structured to facilitate access to its contents, and equipped with aids to navigate the global network ... with users and holdings totally distributed, but managed as a coherent whole." Mel Collier, International Symposium on Research,
Development, and Practice in Digital Libraries 1997
Building on work supported under the multi-agency Digital Libraries Initiative, this program aims to establish a national digital library that will constitute an online network of learning environments and resources for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education at all levels. In FY2003, the program will accept proposals in three tracks: (1) Collections projects are expected to aggregate and manage a subset of the library's content within a coherent theme or specialty. Founded in 1983, CME has as a small but active membership.
Our mission is to support teachers involved with mathematics at all levels from nursery to tertiary.
We produce supported distance learning courses for students, books and packs for supporting individuals and groups wishing to work on their professional development in relation to mathematics, based on our research projects and other activities.
We also undertake professional development work in schools and local education authorities.
Our approach is to work on ways of working, whether on mathematics, or on the teaching and learning of mathematics. People Courses Research - Projects and Themes Other Projects, Products and Activities Contributions to Government Agencies National Day Conference 2003

Issues in Mathematics Education
  • Mathematical Proficiency for All Students: Toward a Strategic Research and Development Program in Mathematics Education . The RAND Mathematics Study Panel invites comments from educational researchers, administrators, teachers, curriculum developers, and other educators, on their draft report, which proposes an agenda of cumulative, programmatic research designed to provide evidence-based knowledge needed to enable all students to become mathematically proficient. The report is part of an effort supported by the U.S. Department of Education. April 2002.
  • Adding It Up: Helping Children Learn Mathematics , report released by the National Research Council's Mathematics Learning Study Committee, calls for systematic improvements in the teaching of mathematics, and attempts to move past the recent "math wars" by examining research about learning and teaching mathematics. February, 2001.
  • National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century (Glenn Commission), releases report "Before It's Too Late", September 27, 2000.
  • Congressman Vernon Ehlers introduces three Bills to improve mathematics and science education
H.R.4271, which would authorize nearly $100 million annually for new National Science Foundation programs, was unanimously endorsed by the House Science Committee, July 26, 2000. A key provision of this bill would provide funds for "master" science and mathematics teachers, who would help improve curricula and conduct professional development training for new teachers. The bill has yet to be approved by the full House andmore importantlyreceive funding from the Appropriations Committee if it is to be implemented in FY 2001. Prospects for a companion Senate bill are uncertain. Ehlers' other education bills (H.R. 4272 and H.R. 4273) are moving more slowly.

Uses of Java Applets in Mathematics Education
C. P. Mawata
University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
For many teachers, instruction using web pages conjures up the image of a book in the vertical plane and no pedagogical advantage. With the advent of Java applets this is no longer the case. This paper aims to demonstrate that applets are very powerful as a medium of instruction. Examples of several ways in which applets can improve mathematics instruction will be given. The reader, however, should not be left with the impression that these applets are all that can be done. The hope is that the reader will think of instances where an applet would be appropriate in his or her teaching. The level of the material to be learned can be anywhere from elementary school to tertiary level. We start with applets used to generate examples and instances of the objects under discussion. The applet below is inserted in a web page just after acute and obtuse angles have been defined. Rather than one or two pictures of acute and obtuse angles the terminal side sweeps through angles from to 180 degrees. You will find that even people who are quite familiar with acute and obtuse angles will patiently watch the applet as the angles change. What this applet is doing is holding the students attention and reinforcing the definition. Many students watch carefully to see if at 90 degrees it does say right angle. It is desirable to have a start/stop button so that students can stop the animation when they are done with it. This way the applet does not become a distraction.
