    In the of 1823 Cauchy gives what is identified as the first modern definition of integral. He considers the case of continuous functions on an interval, and then expands on the case of the functions with one or a finite number of discontinuity . In an 1829 article of in the "Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik", dealing with the problem of the representation of functions in Fourier's series, Dirichlet raises the issue of the case of functions with a finite number of discontinuity, also giving the example of the function carrying his name. In 1854 Bernhard Riemann (1826-1866) wrote his thesis for the University teaching qualification, entitled , that is "On the possibility to represent a function through a trigonometric series", which remained unknown until 1867 when it was published by Dedekind. Here, the integral called after him is introduced and is supplied with examples of functions that, even with an infinite number of discontinuity, turn out to be integrable. Numerous researches are grafted on this new definition. They relate to the properties of the subsets of the straight line, first among them those of Cantor. More and more contributions were added about the characterisation of integrability in relation to the set of points of discontinuity like the ones from Hermann Henkel, Paul Du Bois - Reymond, Henry Smith, Axel Harnack, Vito Volterra.

    Measuring Calculus Integration Formulas Using Function Point Analysis

    Dr. Charles Tichenor, Defense Security Cooperation Agency Function point counters, software developers, and others occasionally need to measure the size and complexity of calculus integration formulas embedded in engineering and scientific applications. Sizing these formulas using function point analysis can result in more accurate measures of application size and improved quality in forecasting costs, schedule, and quality. It can also improve the confidence of those new to the function point methodology as they see that all of their calculus work is recognized and measured. This article shows an approach to sizing these formulas. This methodology is in full compliance with the International Function Point Users Group procedures and does not require any additional counting rules or patches. Measuring the size and complexity of software is critical to the development of business models that accurately forecast the development cost, duration, and quality of future software applications. One way to measure software size is through function point analysis, especially using the methodology of the International Function Point Users Group (IFPUG) as published in their "Function Point Counting Practices Manual" (CPM) version 4.1 [1]. Readers unfamiliar with function point analysis are referred to the CPM as the primary reference for this methodology.

    Introduction
    Measure theory and integration is the study of lengths, surface area, and volumes in general spaces. This is a critical feature of a full development of integration theory; moreover, it provides the basic framework for probability theory. Measure theory is a meeting place between the tame applicability of real functions and the wild possibilities of set theory. This is the setting of fractals.
    History
    Applications and related fields
    For numerical integration of real functions see Numerical Analysis Treated here are measure theory both abstractly and on the real line. For measure theory and analysis on Lie groups, see 43-XX. For measure and integration on infinite-dimensional vector spaces see 46-XX and 47-XX. The Borel sets and related families are constructed as a part of "descriptive" set theory (now in section 03E). Chaotic attractors are treated in 37: Dynamical Systems ; these may lead to fractal sets.

    by Robert A. Korajczyk A wide array of official capital controls across countries makes it difficult to perform cross-sectional analysis of the effects of market segmentation. This article constructs a measure of deviations from capital market integration that can be consistently applied across countries. It measures the deviations of asset returns from an equilibrium model of returns constructed assuming market integration. Applying the measure to stock returns from twenty-four national markets indicates that market segmentation tends to be much larger for emerging markets than for developed markets, and that the measure tends to decrease over time. Along several dimensions, the proposed measure yields results that are consistent with reasonable priors about the relations between effective integration and explicit capital controls, capital market development, and economic growth.
