Mechanics of Solids and Structures The research program in the Mechanics of Solids and Structures is very flexible and new directions of investigation are readily accommodated. New technical areas and interests are continually being generated and developed by members of the Solid Mechanics Group, motivated mainly by current advanced technological developments in areas in which the behavior of materials and their efficient exploitation play a major role. Although there are no sharp boundaries between fields of faculty interest and there is a great deal of overlap ill subject matter, the current research program in Solid Mechanics and Structures can be divided, conveniently but arbitrarily, into several inter-connected areas, which are described below. 1. Mechanical Behavior of Metals, Ceramic and Glasses under High Rate Loading For many years the group has been especially active in investigating the formation of shear bands in metals. These investigations include the study of temperature and strain distributions during shear band formation in simple shear; analysis of the effects of strain hardening, strain-rate sensitivity, thermal softening, and inertia on the development of shear bands. Phenomenological models have greatly improved our understanding of the mechanisms responsible for forming shear bands. To reveal the features of a material which control the formation of the bands, detailed microstructural models are being developed of shear band formation in steels. The predictions of the theory are compared with experimental TEM studies of shear bands.

Welcome to the Division of Engineering at Brown University ! The mechanics of solids is an engineering science that is fundamental to the practice of mechanical, civil, structural, and aeronautical engineering; it is also directly relevant to materials engineering, nanotechnology, biology, geophysics, and other branches of engineering and applied science. The Mechanics of Solids Group at Brown University fosters a balanced program of research and instruction that integrates the perspectives of continuum mechanics, structure of matter, and materials science. The program has a long tradition of leadership through innovations in the analytical, computational, and experimental concepts and methodologies that form the core of the field. Current focal points for activities in the program are the NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) on Micro- and Nanomechanics of Electronic and Structural Materials and the General Motors Collaborative Research Center on Computational Micromechanics of Materials. The Group also operates and maintains the state-of-the-art Computational Mechanics Research Facility for use by its graduate students and faculty.

Theme The theme of this doctoral school is the nonlinear mechanics (kinematics, dynamics, energetics) of large transformations of solids and fluid flows (geometric non-linearities), together with the strength of materials (elasticity, viscoelasticity, elastoplasticity, damage, fracture) and the rheology (viscosity) of non-Newtonian liquids (material non-linearities). Intermediate subjects such as contact mechanics and tribology, fluid-solid interactions, phase transformations, nonsmooth mechanics, …. and multidisciplinary extensions such as thermomechanics, chemico-mechanics, biomechanics, … are offered (and delivered according to student demand).
The ambition of the program is to cover the theoretical formulation (functional, variational and differential), the numerical simulation (space, time and matter discretisations) and the experimental identification (heterogenous/anisotropic material testing, optical diagnostic techniques, signal processing) of relevant mechanics problems. On the theoretical side, contemporary multiscale models (hierarchical, reduced, …) and correlated micro-macro scale bridging methods (homogeneisation, …) are emphasized in several courses.
The program goal is to bring the doctoral student up to the current state of knowledge in this rapidly evolving field of continuum mechanics modelling, which has become essential for many of today's interdisciplinary research areas.

edited by David W A Rees (Brunel University, UK)
The fifteen chapters of this book are arranged in a logical progression. The text begins with the more fundamental material on stress, strain and plane elasticity. There follows a full treatment of the theories of bending and torsion. Coverage of moment distribution, shear flow, struts and energy methods precedes a chapter on finite elements. Thereafter, the book presents yield and strength criteria, plasticity, collapse, creep, visco-elasticity, fatigue and fracture mechanics. Appended is material on the properties of areas, matrices and stress concentrations. Each topic is illustrated by worked examples and supported by numerous exercises. The broad text ensures its suitability for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in mechanical, aeronautical, civil and materials engineering.
