Residual Stresses in Elastic Bodies

University of Illinois Residual stress is the stress present in a fixed reference configuration in which the body is at rest in the absence of external forces. In this investigation, residual stress is viewed as constitutive information in order to develop nondestructive mechanical tests that lead to the residual stress fields in bodies of various shapes that respond in a linearly elastic manner to small deformations from the residually stressed state. Energy theorems are being used to bound the residual stress in terms of experimental data and solutions to associated classical problems.
Nucleation and Refinement of Microstructure in Martensitic Alloys

National Science Foundation, MSS-9309082 (Penn State); University of Illinois Martensitic alloys exhibit metastable equilibria involving microstructures consisting of different phases and their variants. Particular microstructural features may, depending on context, enhance or inhibit performance of such alloys. This research is intended to increase understanding of the manner in which various microstructures are created and altered during the course of phase transitions in martensitic alloys.

Hugh Stark The Mechanics of Solids Laboratory is a facility dedicated to the structural testing and design of components and materials. There are three strands of activity: (a) teaching experiments, predominantly undergraduate,
(b) research, predominantly staff and postgraduates, and
(c) contract research, consulting and investigations for industry. Capabilities include high speed fatigue load cycling using a 250 kN Instron 8504 universal test machine, strain gauging, pressure testing, strength testing of materials, finite element stress analysis, structural design of components and capital equipment, pressure testing and much general experimental mechanical test instrumentation.     Catalog Description
    Mechanical response of materials: Simple tension in elastic, plastic and viscoelastic members. Continuum mechanics: The stress and strain tensors, equilibrium, kinematics. Three-dimensional elastic, plastic and viscoelastic problems. Thermal, transformation stresses. Weak and minimization principles. Also listed as Materials Science and Engineering 211.
    Expanded Description
    This course serves the three-fold purpose of a) introducing the concepts and methods of solid mechanics, in a self-contained, fairly rigorous manner, b) discussing the stress analysis questions, that are most relevant for the engineering and the material science professions, and c) presenting the various modes of thermomechanical material response, and the corresponding analytical tools. Stress-strain curves for elastic, elastoplastic, and viscoelastic bodies under uniaxial load are exhibited, and mathematically represented. The physical microphenomena leading to the macroscopic response (e.g. dislocations and plasticity, macromolecular alignment and creep) are also discussed. The study of thermal stresses completes the section devoted to unidimensional analysis. The generalization of the above to bi- and tri-dimensional states requires the fundamentals of continuum kinematics (measures of strain, linearization, compatibility) and continuum kinetics (measures of stress, linearization, equilibrium). After these are introduced, the three-dimensional elastic, elastoplastic, and viscoelastic constitutive relations are specified, and the properties of the corresponding boundary-and initial-value problems are discussed. Strong, weak and minimization forms are discussed in detail. Most of the presented analyses are restricted to the geometrically linear theory of homogeneous materials.
