Aims
  • To develop the ability to analyze stresses and strains in simple engineering structures using the principles of solid mechanics in the linear elastic regime.
Objectives
  • Understand the concept of free body diagrams. Understand the concept of stress at a point. Be able to solve simple problems involving engineering structures subjected to axial, torsional, bending and/or transverse loads. Understand the concept of plane stress and the transformation of stresses and strains under plane stress conditions. Be able to draw shearing force and bending moment diagrams for beams under concentrated and/or distributed loads.

    Head: Prof. Habil. Dr. Antanas Ziliukas The Department was founded in . The material testing laboratory of this department in 1920 met the world standards and was the best in the Baltic countries. The first Lithuanian textbook on strength of materials was published in 1935 (author Prof. K.Vasiliauskas). In 1962 the Department of Strength Mechanics was reorganised into two: the departments Strength of Materials and Structural Mechanics. The latter was moved to Vilnius. It was named the Department of Mechanics of Solids on September 1, 1993. Its science and studies trends differ from the predecessors by a more expansive curriculum that combines the problems of strength of materials and structures, durability, fracture mechanics, stability, and is a part of the area of mechanical reliability of structures. The work of the Department is represented by 11 monographs, 9 textbooks (one of which is the first Lithuanian textbook “Elementary Course of Strength of Materials”, 1935) and over two thousand scientific publications.
