Douglas N. Arnold
Since 2001 I have held the position of Director of the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications in Minneapolis and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota. My research mostly concerns numerical analysis, partial differential equations, mechanics, and in particular, the interplay between these fields. Recently much of my effort has been directed toward the numerical solution of the equations of general relativity. Last modified January 1, 2003 by Douglas N. Arnold, arnold@ima.umn.edu

Numerical Analysis plays an important part in all areas of modern Applied Mathematics and opportunities for the design, implementation and analysis of computational techniques of mathematical models of physical processes exist within all the main areas of research. The main pre-occupation in these areas concerns the solution of ordinary and partial differential equations. In particular, there is considerable computational work currently being undertaken in the research groups: Waves, Vortices and Turbulence under the direction of Prof David Dritschel and Solar MHD under the direction of Prof Alan Hood. There are also opportunities in related areas, such as Computational Techniques in Heat Transfer and aspects of Approximation Theory.

    Numerical analysis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Numerical analysis is that branch of applied mathematics which studies the methods and algorithms to find (approximate) numerical solutions to various mathematical problems. The problems considered include Computers are an essential tool in numerical analysis, but the field predates computers by many centuries. Taylor approximation is a product of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that is still very important. The logarithms of the sixteenth century are no longer vital to numerical analysis, but the associated and even prehistoric notion of

    Numerical Analysis
The Numerical Analysis Group is involved in research into techniques for the solution of large scale problems in science, engineering, operations research and economics. One of the main strengths of the group, and one for which it is internationally recognized, is in the solution of large sparse systems of linear equations, and of large-scale linear and nonlinear optimization problems. Members of the group are involved in many collaborative ventures overseas, including projects with Belgium, France, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, and the USA. This work is described in our series of technical reports and in various publications. Information is also disseminated through invited and contributed presentations at international meetings and conferences and some of our talks are available from the Web. Furthermore, implementations of the underlying numerical algorithms are generally available in software developed both for HSL (formerly the Harwell Subroutine Library), for
