Introduction
Operator theory studies transformations between the vector spaces studied in Functional Analysis, such as differential operators or self-adjoint operators. The analysis might study the spectrum of an individual operator or the semigroup structure of a collection of them.

IWOTA 2002 Thirteenth International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications Department of Mathematics Virginia Tech, August 6-9, 2002 The International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications (IWOTA) has met biannually since 1981 and more frequently in recent years (starting in 1995) rotating among eight countries on three continents (see history ).The IWOTA conferences offer a rich program on a wide range of the latest developments in operator theory and its applications. The original concept of the workshop was as a satellite conference for operator theorists to the broader based international symposia on Mathematical Theory of Networks and Systems MTNS . While this concept is still in place, the scope of IWOTA has broadened considerably in recent years and has now attained an independent identity as a major world-wide conference for recent developments in core operator theory and its applications. Introduction From May 21 - May 25, 1998, the University of Alberta hosted the 26th edition of the Canadian Operator Theory and Operator Algebras Symposium . Along with the usual assortment of dancing elephants and bicycle riding bears, we managed to include some live mathematicians performing death-defying expositions of new theorems, corollaries, propositions and other results. Without a net. Ok, there were nets. There were filters. Even categories. In fact, there were the best of categories. There were the worst of categories. The Final Version of the Registration Handbook is now available. It is essentially identical to the one that was distributed at the conference, except that corrections have been made to the list of speakers and abstracts. You can obtain it by

Institute of Mathematics, Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences, Tashkent, Uzbekistan
This volume presents the lectures given during the second French-Uzbek Colloquium on Algebra and Operator Theory which took place in Tashkent in 1997, at the Mathematical Institute of the Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences. Among the algebraic topics discussed here are deformation of Lie algebras, cohomology theory, the algebraic variety of the laws of Lie algebras, Euler equations on Lie algebras, Leibniz algebras, and real K -theory. Some contributions have a geometrical aspect, such as supermanifolds. The papers on operator theory deal with the study of certain types of operator algebras. This volume also contains a detailed introduction to the theory of quantum groups.
Audience: This book is intended for graduate students specialising in algebra, differential geometry, operator theory, and theoretical physics, and for researchers in mathematics and theoretical physics. Contents and Contributors Kluwer Academic Publishers, Dordrecht

A sample of the FRG research problems:
    • Definition: A subset is said to be a wavelet set for an expansive integral matrix if the inverse Fourier transform of is a wavelet, i.e., if the double indexed family , is an orthonormal basis for . (This is equivalent to tiling both under the translations and the scalings Problem A: Wavelet set implementation. Because of the structure of wavelet sets, their explicit constructions, and the potential usefulness of dealing with only one wavelet in higher dimensions, there are two immediate and natural problems. We wish to develop recursive programmable schemes for applications, cf. [BT93, Stro00a, Wic94], as well as a theoretical formulation in terms of frames, cf. [HL00, Han97]. This latter approach would sacrifice orthonormality, which is often not a sacrifice in applications dealing with noise reduction and stable representation. On the other hand, the frame theoretic approach would reduce the recursive complexity, it would add smoothness in the spectral domain, and it would provide an iterative method of signal reconstruction. Related to this whole issue is the necessity of a critical comparison of the geometrical constructions in [BS01] and the theoretical but constructive approach in [BMM99] in terms of multiplicity functions and finite von Neumann algebras.
