Description
This book offers a comprehensive and reader-friendly exposition of the theory of linear operators on Banach spaces and Banach lattices. Abramovich and Aliprantis give a unique presentation that includes many new developments in operator theory and also draws together results that are spread over the vast literature. For instance, invariant subspaces of positive operators and the Daugavet equation are presented in monograph form for the first time. The authors keep the discussion self-contained and use exercises to achieve this goal. The book contains over 600 exercises to help students master the material developed in the text. The exercises are of varying degrees of difficulty and play an important and useful role in the exposition. They help to free the proofs of the main results of some technical details but provide students with accurate and complete accounts of how such details ought to be worked out. The exercises also contain a considerable amount of additional material that includes many well-known results whose proofs are not readily available elsewhere. The companion volume

    Polynomially bounded operators not similar to contractions : recent developments Catalin Badea (University of Lille) A bounded linear Hilbert space operator T in B( H ) is said to be similar to a contraction if there exists an invertible operator L in B( H ) such that L TL The operator T is called polynomially bounded M such that the inequality T M z z holds for all polynomials p in C z ]. It is said to be power bounded if the same inequality holds for all monomials p n z z n The von Neumann inequality for contractions implies that every operator similar to a contraction is polynomially bounded. Several examples of power bounded operators which are not polynomialy bounded are known today; the first such example is due to S. Foguel (1964). The first example of a polynomially bounded, not similar to a contraction, Hilbert space operator was exhibited only recently by G. Pisier (1997). This gives a negative answer for the so-called Halmos' similarity problem. An operator-theoretic proof of Pisier's result was given by K. Davidson and V. Paulsen (1997).     Traditionally discrete time systems have been modelled using shift operators. The unsatisfactory behaviour of discretisations based on shift operators, particularly for small sampling times, has led to a resurgence of interest in discretisation based on the delta operator. In this work Marion Hersh is developing a theory of operators and using it to obtain a unified representation of continuous and discrete time systems. She has derived a number of criteria which determine satisfactory behaviour of a given representation and used them to investigate the comparative performance of discretisions based on different operators. She is also working on the development of control algorithms based on a 'generalised' operator which can be used, without modification, to control both continuous and discrete time systems webperson@eng.gla.ac.uk

    [HE.013] The Invariant Operator Theory, and the Unification of the Fundamental Interactions
    Amagh Nduka (Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria) This paper established explicitly and unambiguously that the Invariant Operator Theory is the most general physical theory that can be constructed in a pseudo-euclidean (space-time) background. Specifically, we show that the field theories of Isaac Newton, Clarke Maxwell, Erwin Schrodinger, Klein-Gordon, and Paul A. M. Dirac are mere derivatives of the new Theory. Finally we discuss the unification of the fundamental interactions. We find that the NEW Physics has succesfully resolved all the outstanding problems of Physics, with the exception of the problem of mass. Part H of program listing
