Catalogue entry An appreciation of how an important part of classical mathematics (linear algebra) has had to be extended to being a cornerstone of contemporary mathematics (operator theory on infinite dimensional spaces) and of how these extensions - far from being generalisations for generalisation's sake - were often precipitated by developments outside mathematics (especially quantum theory). As such the module renders explicit the architectonic character (implicit in MAX2050) and, as such, it is characteristic of the creative activity of many later twentieth century mathematicians. Aims This module renders explicit the architectonic character implicit in MAX2050 and, as such, it is characteristic of the creative activity of many of the twentieth century mathematicians.It aims are: 1. To provide the student with an appreciation of how an important part of classical mathematics (linear algebra) has had to be extended and as a result has become a cornerstone of contemporary mathematics. 2. To how these extensions - far from being generalizations for generalization's sake - were often precipated by developments outside mathematics, (especially quantum theory). Learning outcomes KNOWLEDGE: To understand: 1. How infinite-dimensional linear mathematics had to exist; 2. An infinite-dimensional space as a single object of thought; 3. YASUTAMI TAKADA Institute for Solid State Physics, University of Tokyo, 5-1-5 Kashiwanoha, Kashiwa, Chiba 277-8581, Japan An approximation scheme is proposed for implementing the algorithm to obtain the exact self-energy in the many-body problem [ Phys. Rev. , 12708 (1995)]. This scheme relates the self-energy revision operator F , the key quantity in the algorithm, with f xc q w ) the frequency-dependent exchange-correlation kernel appearing in the time-dependent density functional theory. We illustrate this scheme by applying it to the calculation of dynamic properties of the electron gas at metallic densities.
