Welcome to the SSST Home Page The Southeastern Symposium on System Theory (SSST) is an annual technical conference hosted,
on a rotating basis, by various Universities in the Southeastern United States.
The first SSST was hosted by Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) in 1969.
The conference consists of invited and contributed technical papers on theoretical and applied issues associated with the: organization, modeling, analysis, simulation, control, operation and performance-evaluation of systems (as well as tools for system computations and education). Traditionally, papers presented at the SSST have focused on system-issues from fields such as: mathematical theory of systems and signals, control of electro-mechanical systems, communications, signal processing, navigation, guidance, robotics, energy and power, electronic devices, computers and networks, optics, aerospace, chemical processing, manufacturing, etc. However, papers on system-issues from other fields are also of interest.

SYSTEM THEORY
Notes for his class by Professor John Lye . If you have and questions, suggestions, corrections, mail me System theory is a way of looking at how the elements of the world are organized, so that pattern of interactions through which entities in it seek their goals, maintain their equilibrium, and relate in meaningful ways with one another and their environment, become clear. The theory assumes are that the world is intrinsically organized in hierarchical systems and that communication, the exchange of responses and information, is essential to all living things. The form of any system will be the result of particular system's goals, component parts and environment; but the principles of operation will be the same for any system. Human beings behave in ways that reflect their place in the systems they are in and the environment of those systems. Because of the commonality of systems, the way humans behave will be predictable, given that you know enough about the goals and conditions of the systems they are in and the constraints they are under. There will be predictable patterns; in fact, 'patterns of behaviour' is what communication is.

The observation and understanding of extra-solar planetary systems has become a very exciting topic that poses challenges to many fields of human knowledge. A few years after the first observational evidence of planets outside the Solar System, this field of research has experienced spectacular developments. One of the characteristics of the field is that it draws together researchers from a variety of fields: astrophysics, geophysics, biochemistry, etc., and opens up new areas for their interactions. This book sets out a synthesis of the advances and points of view of this adventure. Young students, researchers, engineers involved or about to become involved in this challenging quest for extra-solar planets will benefit by reading such a synthetic review. System Theory: Modeling, Analysis and Control contains thirty-three scientific papers covering a wide range of topics in systems and control. These papers have been contributed to a symposium organized to celebrate Sanjoy K. Mitter's 65th birthday. The following research topics are addressed: distributed parameter systems, stochastic control, filtering and estimation, optimization and optimal control, image processing and vision, hierarchical systems and hybrid control, nonlinear systems, and linear systems. Also included are three survey papers on optimization, nonlinear filtering, and nonlinear systems. Recent advances are reported on the behavioral approach to systems, the relationship between differential games and robust control, estimation of diffusion processes, Markov processes, optimal control, hybrid control, stochastic control, spectral estimation, nonconvex quadratic programming, robust control, control algorithms and quantized linear systems. Innovative explorations are carried out on quantum systems from a control theory perspective, option valuation and hedging, three-dimensional medical visualization, computational structure biology image processing, and hierarchical approaches to complex systems, flow control, scheduling and force feedback in fluid mechanics. The contents reflect on past research accomplishments, current research activity, and future research directions in systems and control theory.

    GENERAL SYSTEM THEORY
The notion of a system may be seen as simply a more self-conscious and generic term for the dynamic interrelatedness of components.
    Von Bertalanffy
Ludwig Von Bertalanffy was a Hungarian biologist educated in Vienna, a member of the famed "Vienna School." He fathered an organismic approach to biology as a reaction to the vitalism-reductionism arguments that were rampant in his day. More important for the purpose of this thesis, he founded the science of "General System Theory". The idea of the whole as more than the sum of its parts is as old as Aristotle, but that there are characteristics of systems that are homologous to all systems simply because they are systems can be traced directly to Von Bertalanffy. Von Bertalanffy explained that he thought of the idea of General System Theory back in 1936 but hesitated until 1948 when the intellectual climate was more receptive. However, William Johnston showed that the basic elements were in his mind as far back as the twenties, A forgotten episode in Von Bertalanffy's apprenticeship is the culture-criticism which he wrote during the 1920's. Where the seeds of General System Theory are already visible. In reviewing books by the Viennese art historians, Josef Strzygowski and Max Dvorak, Von Bertalanffy lauded Oswald Spengler for having interpreted culture as an integrated system, wúithin any culture, ideas and artistic forms interact with one another and with social institutions to simulate a common style. It is this process of interaction rather than its separate components which a historian of culture must study, For Spengler and for Strzygowski, a culture is what Von Bertalanffy would later call an "open system", digesting influences from without while undergoing interactions among its various levels.
