PREDICTING QUALITY OUTCOMES WITH A SOCIAL SYSTEM THEORY OF NURSING EMPATHY Martha Raile Alligood, PhD, RN and Mary Ellen Gunther, PhD, RN Given the quality crisis in acute care settings reported in recent research, new systematic approaches designed to produce positive health outcomes are warranted. The purpose of this study was to discover a theory of empathy from the interpretation of nursing science text, King’s Interacting System and Empathy. A published review of that text noted an implicit theory of empathy in that work. This study was designed to explicate a social system of nursing empathy from the text. Two other theories, personal system and interpersonal system, have been discovered. This paper presents the social system theory with an emphasis on predictable quality outcomes for acute care improvements. The research question was: What explicit theory of empathy can be discovered from the examination of the conceptualization of empathy in King’s social system? The rationale for the study was to address the need for a theory of nursing empathy since reviews of the literature have repeatedly identified the need for theories of empathy that are specific to nursing. The method utilized was a qualitative design of hermeneutic interpretation of published nursing science text. This approach was used by a research team who carried out the following process: (1) production of meaning through reading, (2) interpretation of the part being examined in relation to the whole, (3) consideration of the historical context under which the text was produced, and (4) recording of newly discovered text (Allen, 1995).

The last few years have been characterized by exciting new developments in system theory. Breakthroughs in system representations, in the analysis of nonlinear dynamical systems, in the design of intelligent adaptive control algorithms, and in the modeling and verification of hybrid systems have greatly contributed to the electrifying and turbulent atmosphere that presently exists within the field. The mini-course "System Theory on the Eve of the 21st Century" brings together a group of experts on system theory to lecture on state-of-the-art topics of current interest in the field - and to speculate on the directions these topics might be headed in the future. The lectures are aimed at an audience consisting of graduate students, researchers, and university professors with back-grounds in System Theory or Applied Mathematics.

In order to describe the origins and initial workings of a world system, I have had to argue a certain conception of a world-system. A world-system is a social system, one that has boundaries, structures, member groups, rules of legitimation, and coherence. Its life is made up of the conflicting forces which hold it together by tension and tear it apart as each group seeks eternally to remold it to its advantage. It has the characteristics of an organism, in that it has a life-span over which its characteristics change in some respects and remain stable in others. One can define its structures as being at different times strong or weak in terms of the internal logic of its functioning. Using such a criterion, it is contended here that most entities usually described as social systems "tribes," communities, nation-statesare not in fact total systems. Indeed, on the contrary, we are arguing that the only real social systems are, on the one hand, those relatively small, highly autonomous subsistence economies not part of some regular tribute-demanding system and, on the other hand, world-systems. These latter are to be sure distinguished from the former because they are relatively large; that is, they are in common parlance "worlds." More precisely, however, they are defined by the fact that their self-containment as an economic-material entity is based on extensive division of labor and that they contain within them a multiplicity of cultures.

ECE 415 Control System Theory and Design
Synthesis of feedback control systems to meet design specifications, including sensitivity; multivariable systems; introduction to systems with random inputs; state variable techniques; and nonlinear systems. This is a fundamental graduate-level course on the modern theory of control of dynamical systems, building upon a first-level course in control such as ECE 386. State space techniques are emphasized in the analysis of dynamical systems and in the synthesis of control laws meeting given design specifications. The course also develops some mathematical tools required for further study in control and communication. To follow the course, some familiarity with vector spaces and matrix algebra is strongly recommended. Some of this material will, however, be reviewed during the course in proper contexts. Prerequisite: Electrical and Computer Engineering 386 or equivalent, or consent of instructor.

  • Introduction
  • There are as many world system theories as there are world system theorists. Fernand Braudel first proposed the notion of a world-system to understand the Mediterranean region in the early modern times (Braudel 1949). This concept was then taken up by Immanuel Wallerstein to encompass a much larger system, both spatially and temporally, that is, the five hundred years old capitalist world-system (Wallerstein 1974). He took it to be fundamentally different from previously existing world-systems, world-empires (politico-militarily unified) or world-economies (not unified). The main and determining difference was the mode of production, with commodification of labour and ceaseless accumulation of capital in the capitalist world-system. More recently, Andre Gunder Frank and Barry K. Gills proposed that a single I accept a version of the theory that is decidedly pre-1500, and involves both continuationist and transformationist aspects inasmuch as a single world system with very general constant properties is considered, but allowing for fundamental transformations within it.

    Abstract: By extending the system theory under the (min, +) algebra to the time-varying setting, we solve the problem of constrained traffic regulation and develop a calculus for dynamic service guarantees. For a constrained traffic-regulation problem with maximum tolerable delay d and maximum buffer size Q, the optimal regulator that generates the output traffic conforming to a subadditive envelope f and minimizes the number of discarded packets is a concatenation of the g-clipper with g(t) = min[f(t+d), f(t)+q] and the maximal f-regulator. The g-clipper is a bufferless device, which optimally drops packets as necessary in order that its output be conformant to an envelope g. The maximal f-regulator is a buffered device that delays packets as necessary in order that its output be conformant to an envelope f. The maximal f-regulator is a linear time-invariant filter with impulse response f, under the (min, +) algebra. To provide dynamic service guarantees in a network, we develop the concept of a dynamic server as a basic network element. Dynamic servers can be joined by concatenation,"filter bank summation,"and feedback to form a composite dynamic server. We also show that dynamic service guarantees for multiple input streams sharing a work-conserving link can be achieved by a dynamic service curve earliest deadline scheduling algorithm, if an appropriate admission control is enforced.

The seven chakras (Sanskrit for wheels or disks ) are wheels of bioenergetic activity radiating from nerve ganglia (clusters) that start at the base of the spine and continue on to the crown of the head.     What is Systems Theory?
    Systems Theory : the transdisciplinary study of the abstract organization of phenomena, independent of their substance, type, or spatial or temporal scale of existence. It investigates both the principles common to all complex entities, and the (usually mathematical) models which can be used to describe them. Systems theory was proposed in the 1940's by the biologist Ludwig von Bertalanffy : General Systems Theory, 1968 ), and furthered by Ross Ashby Introduction to Cybernetics The developments of systems theory are diverse (Klir, Facets of Systems Science , 1991), including conceptual foundations and philosophy (e.g. the philosophies of Bunge, Bahm and Laszlo); mathematical modeling and information theory (e.g. the work of Mesarovic and Klir ); and practical applications. Mathematical systems theory arose from the development of isomorphies between the models of electrical circuits and other systems. Applications include engineering, computing, ecology, management, and family psychotherapy.     Cybernetics and Systems Theory
    The following links provide general background information on the field of Cybernetics and Systems Theory , an interdisciplinary academic domain. This material was collected and is provided in the context of the Principia Cybernetica Project , but can be consulted independently of the rest of the project. Although there are relatively few research centers and even fewer educational programs devoted to the domain, a lot of activity is going on in between established departments. This is shown by the number of associations , conferences and journals active in the domain. The best way of getting acquainted with the main ideas of cybernetics and systems theory is to read a few of the classic books or papers defining the domain. Some of these books are freely available through our Principia Cybernetica library . Other, specific bibliographic references can be found in the library database of the Department of Medical Cybernetics and AI at the University of Vienna.
