Eric J. Stollnitz Tony D. DeRose David H. Salesin Wavelets are a mathematical tool for hierarchically decomposing functions. Using wavelets, a function can be described in terms of a coarse overall shape, plus details that range from broad to narrow. Regardless of whether the function of interest is an image, a curve, or a surface, wavelets provide an elegant technique for representing the levels of detail present. This primer is intended to provide those working in computer graphics with some intuition for what wavelets are, as well as to present the mathematical foundations necessary for studying and using them. In Part 1, we discuss the simple case of Haar wavelets in one and two dimensions, and show how they can be used for image compression. Part 2 presents the mathematical theory of multiresolution analysis, develops bounded-interval spline wavelets, and describes their use in multiresolution curve and surface editing. Part 1 Eric J. Wavelets for Computer Graphics
Overview
Wavelets are a mathematical tool for hierarchically decomposing functions. They allow any function to be described in terms of a coarse overall shape, plus details that range from broad to narrow. As the figures below illustrate, wavelets can be applied to a wide variety of objects used in graphics, including images, curves, surfaces, and the solutions to lighting simulations. Images

Although a great deal has been written about wavelets, most of the literature uses terminology from signal processing and pure mathematics. Our aim in writing the tutorial article and the book listed below was to provide a consistent theoretical framework for those working in computer graphics, as well as examples of graphics applications that make use of wavelets. wavelets. wavelets are a relatively recent arrival on the scene, starting to maketheir mark in both the mathematical and applied communities in the mid 1980s.

Wavelets
A two-hour tutorial on ``Image Compression Using Wavelets'' was given at the International Conference CIMAF 2001 (6th Symposium on Mathematics and 4th Italo-Latinoamerican Conference on Industrial and Applied Mathematics) in Havana, Cuba, 19th-23rd March, 2001.
The most recent (four-hour) minicourse introducing wavelets given under the auspices of the MAA was at the Joint Winter Meeting in San Antonio, in January 1999. An invited talk on Wavelets - a new tool for imaging, graphics and Hollywood was given on Friday 19th March during the 16th Annual Conference on Undergraduate Mathematics at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (in Terre Haute, IN). Wavelets are a relatively recent arrival on the scene, starting to make their mark in both the mathematical and applied communities in the mid 1980s. They provide an alternative to classical Fourier methods for one- and multi-dimensional data analysis and synthesis, and have numerous applications both within mathematics (e.g., to partial differential operators) and in areas as diverse as physics, seismology, medical imaging, digital image processing, signal processing and computer graphics and video The most popular and accessible application of wavelets is probably to image compression.

MathWorks - Wavelet Toolbox - The Wavelet Toolbox provides a comprehensive collection of routines for examining local, multiscale, and nonstationary phenomena. Wavelet methods offer additional insight and performance in any application where Fourier techniques have been used. The Wavelet Toolbox is useful in many signal processing applications, including speech and audio processing, communications, geophysics, finance, and medicine. A Really Friendly Guide To Wavelets - A good tutorial on Wavelet theory. This article is aimed at the engineer, not the mathematician. Hence, there are no proofs in the text, which means that this tutorial is much easier to read. However, to understand this tutorial, a mathematical background on an engineering level is required. A Wavelet Wading Pool - The paper attempts to give a beginner an understanding of the wavelet transform, by practical application of the wavelet techniques to image compression. The Haar Wavelets are considered and applied to this problem, and the difficulties analyzed. In an attempt to change the artifacts seen in the Haar decomposition, a basis proposed by Richard Bartels is applied and experimented with as well. Both bases turn out to introduce too many artifacts into the image to challenge the JPEG encoding, but the COE basis produces better results than the Haar basis as expected. Hardware and Software Requirements
Warning
This presentation is inspired from S.G. Mallat's book and does not pretend to reflect it exactly. It is concerned with the following topics:
  • Fourier analysis (chapter 2) time-frequency analysis (chapter 4, except for the quadratic energy distributions)) frames (chapter 5) singularity analysis and reconstruction (chapter 6 except for the multifractals) wavelet bases and filter banks (chapter 7)
The following topics from the book are not covered here:
  • chapter 3 about discrete signals (except for the FFT and convolutions algorithms, which are briefly described) chapter 8 on wavelet packets and local cosine bases chapter 9 on approximation chapter 10 about estimation (which is being revised by S.G. Mallat for the French edition and the second US edition) chapter 11 on compression and coding (hope to do it someday)
Proposed Tours
Four tours are proposed, corresponding to four different topics. These tours are linked to each other sequentially. Many links allow navigation from one to topic to another for a nonlinear browsing.

New Generation Signal and Image Analysis
Discover the power of wavelets! Wavelet analysis, in contrast to Fourier analysis, uses approximating functions that are localized in both time and frequency space. It is this unique characteristic that makes wavelets particularly useful, for example, in approximating data with sharp discontinuities. Engineers, physicists, astronomers, geologists, medical researchers, and others have already begun exploring the extraordinary array of potential applications of wavelet analysis, ranging from signal and image processing to data analysis. Wavelet Explorer introduces you to this exciting new area and delivers a broad spectrum of wavelet analysis tools to your desktop. Wavelet Explorer' s ready-to-use functions and utilities let you apply a variety of wavelet transforms to your projects. Generate commonly used filters such as the Daubechies' extremal phase and least asymmetric filters, coiflets, spline filters, and more. Visualize wavelets and wavelet packets and zoom in on their details. You can transform your data to a host of wavelet bases, wavelet packet bases, or local trigonometric bases and do inverse transforms in one and two dimensions. Then view the transform in time-frequency space, selecting different bases and boundary conditions. Data compression and denoising are surprisingly simple procedures with Wavelet Explorer' s built-in functions.
