African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC) History
Source Books on AME Church History . . .
"A complete history of the Negro in America, is unwritten and unwritable. Much that would be most interesting and valuable, went to the grave with those who had no possible means of transmitting it except by the uncertain and unreliable method of tradition. Much that comes down to us through the maze, either written or by tradition is, indeed somber and sad. It becomes the historian of the present day to throw side lights on the dark past, by exhibiting some of its better products, lest the skeptical continue to ask. "Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?" By Bishop L.J. Coppin (1848 - 1924), from his introduction to the Centennial Encyclopedia of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (1816 - 1916).
    Note:
Some of the sources listed here contain information that has been passed down by tradition and through personal accounts that must be understood in light of that person's life and times. A fine example of this is the account of the final incident between Richard Allen, his followers and the St. George's Methodist Episcopal Church. You will find many accounts of that incident that contain a common theme, discrimination on the part of the St. George's church, but details will differ considerably. Perhaps no one will ever know what really happened, however we are convinced that God was working in those days to bring his people of color from bondage into His marvelous light.

    http://web2.iadfw.net/quinnchp/amec.html
    African Methodist Episcopal Church
    Our Name . . .
AFRICAN - means that the church was organized by people of African descent and heritage. It does not mean that the church was founded in Africa or that it is for people of African descent only. It does mean that those Americans who founded it were of African descent and we proudly recognize this fact. We welcome all who worship Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. METHODIST - refers to the church's membership in the family of Methodist churches. Richard Allen, the founder and first bishop, felt that the form and format of Methodism would best suit the needs of the African community at that time. EPISCOPAL - refers to the form of government under which the church operates. The Episcopal form of government means that the chief executive and administrative officers of our denomination are our bishops. Their authority is given them by the General Conference, elected representatives of the entire denomination. Their responsibilities are to oversee the spiritual and temporal affairs of the church.

    40. Dialogue With The African Methodist Episcopal Church
Lutheranafrican methodist episcopal Dialogue. The Evangelical LutheranChurch in America (ELCA) and the african methodist episcopal
    http://www.elca.org/ea/ecumenical/ame/
Lutheran-African Methodist Episcopal Dialogue The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church expressed informally an interest in establishing a bilateral dialogue in the 1980s. A preliminary meeting of representatives from each church met in Washington, D.C., in 1990. Formal meetings began, with the first held in Indianapolis in November 1991 addressing the question "How has the American experience affected and/or shaped the life of my church?" Additional meetings explored questions such as "Protest and Reform: A study of Marth Luther and Richard Allen," "Marginality in the Biblical witness," "The Role of the AME Church in American political culture." The first round of this dialogue was concluded with a fifth session meeting in Gettysburg in March 1996. Understanding One Another: A Congregational Resource was written in the hope that many congregations of our respective communions will use it to accomplish the goal of manifesting the unity of our Christian community in a time when disunity, fragmentation, and outrifht conflict so often mark our society and churches. Limited quantities of this document can be requested by contacting staff of the Department for Ecumenical Affairs.
