Grant Church, Long Beach is the second oldest African-American congregation in Long Beach, founded in 1911. Our current pastor is Rev. Stephen Pierson, who was first assigned to our church in October, 1991. He and his wife, Thelma, reside in the church parsonage. The Grant congregation moved into its present sanctuary in 1985 after a successful Fundraising drive which was started in 1978 under the leadership of Rev. James Grant Sr. The new church was dedicated under the leadership of former pastor, Rev. Norman Copeland. Under the current leadership of Rev. Pierson, several programs have been initiated, one of which is our new Computer Learning Center, named after one of our late members and officer of the church, Dr. Horace Rains, MD. Computers, printers, and software were donated in memory of loved ones. The lab is open regularly on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, Saturdays from 9:30- 11:30 AM and by special appointment through the lab coordinator, James Clayton. Kaufman, Texas 75142 Welcome to the Web site of the Macedonia African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church located in Kaufman Texas. We are a Connectional Church, a local congregation of the worldwide African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC). The AME Church, with roots that go back to 1787 in the United States, has been serving the African-American (Black) community from the days of slavery to the present time. Because some misunderstand the meaning of our name we thought it not robbery to explain its meaning: AFRICAN - means that the church was organized by Americans of African descent and heritage, some actually born in Africa.

Free blacks in Cumberland were no different than their counterparts in other large and growing Northern cities, and in 1847, after worshiping for years from the balcony of Cumberland's Methodist Episcopal Centre Street Church, a group of free blacks decided to leave the predominantly white congregation and organize their own church. The new congregation held services in its new building just a year later. Rebuilt to fit the growing congregation in 1871 and 1875, the Cumberland AME Church constructed their present building in 1891 in the "Methodist tradition" with the sanctuary on the second floor, and the Sunday school class rooms situated on the ground floor. A relatively substantial and decorated building, the Cumberland AME church reflects the growth and success of Cumberland's 19th-century African American community. The Cumberland African Methodist Episcopal Church is located at the corner of Decatur and Frederick Sts. Tours are available by appointment only by calling 301-759-3419.

Mount Zion Cemetery, adjacent to the church, contains more than 200 graves. While most of these graves are unmarked, the oldest marker is from 1861.
Photograph from National Register collection By the end of the Revolutionary War, many Quakers and anti-slavery sympathizers had set aside land for freed slaves. African-American hamlets were established in secluded areas on portions of Quaker land throughout western New Jersey. Small Gloucester, also known as Dutchtown, emerged in the early 19th century as one of these African-American settlements. One well-known Underground Railroad route was the Greenwich Line that began in the hamlet of Springtown , led 25 miles north to Small Gloucester, and continued north to Mount Holly, Burlington and Jersey City, New Jersey. The communities along this route were ideal stations on the Underground Railroad as they were situated about 20 miles apart, surrounded by Quaker land which was often swampy or dense woods, and inhabited by many free African-Americans. For more than 10 years, Harriet Tubman helped operate this line.
