Life in the 1880's
The African Methodist Episcopal, African Methodist Episcopal, Zion and the Christian Methodist Episcopal Churches in Indiana Sheryl D. Vanderstel The first of the three main black Methodist denominations began in Philadelphia with Rev. Richard Allen. Born into slavery and converted to Methodism at the age of 17, Allen almost immediately knew he was called to preach. His owner allowed Richard and his brother to join a Methodist class meeting, led by Delaware farmer John Gray. Allen's owner was so taken by Allen's sincerity that he next allowed interracial religious gathering on his property. Finally, converted to Methodism himself, Allen's owner arranged for the Allen brother to buy their freedom. When Allen won his legal victory he issued an invitation to other black ME congregations to assemble in convention. There were sixteen representatives at the convention in Philadelphia, representing churches in Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland, which joined together to form the African Methodist Episcopal Church in April 1816. They immediately elected Richard Allen as their first bishop. The group determined to adhere to traditional Methodism and adopted a Discipline almost identical to the ME Discipline. The Methodist church had a system of licensed elders, deacons, lay ministers and exhorters to assist in the local church work. This system was adopted not only by the AME but also later by the AME Zion and CME denominations. The bishop headed the church body, which was divided into conferences; each led by a bishop. Each conference then was subdivided into districts. Within a district there could be several circuits. A presiding elder directed the work of the conference. Ordained deacons were the senior circuit riders or local congregational ministers.

PREFACE As we grow to take more serious views of life, its consequent obligations and responsibilities, "in this loud, stunning tide of human care and crime," facing its stern and logical realities, we are impressed with a lively sense of the brief period of our lives in "the vineyard of the Master," in which to labor. It is urgent upon us, not only to be "redeeming the time" (Eph. 5:16)-that is to say, using the privileges granted and accorded in the Church, and taking every advantage of each opportunity, in engaging and turning the energies of all with whom we may have to do in furthering the great cause we represent.

The AME Zion Church
The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church recently celebrated its bicentennial. Since its inception, The Freedom Church has played a critical role as a center of religious, cultural, and political life of the African American Community. During the period of slavery in America, the church provided a network of activists and places of safety for persons escaping to freedom. Many of the key activists of the Underground Railroad in the US and Canada were affiliated with the Church, including Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and the Reverend Jermain Wesley Loguen, who ultimately became a bishop. The current work of the church is rooted it its proud past an traditions. The

Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church
"Wait until the prayer is over, and I will get up and trouble you no more."
T he genesis of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), which today numbers over 2.5 million members, can be traced to a clearing in the Delaware woods in the year 1777. To that sylvan setting an itinerant Methodist preacher came, spreading the gospel to a group of slaves, among whom was a 17-year-old field hand named Richard Allen.
When Allen heard the Word he underwent a religious awakening. Enslaved and recently severed from several members in his family, who were "sold down the river" Allen took solace in his belief that he would never be cut off from God's love. The faith that took root in the forest that day would ultimately enable Allen to establish the first AME Church Mother Bethel. The life of Richard Allen and the history of Mother Bethel are inextricably linked he is the rock upon which the church was built. Richard Allen was born into the slave-owning, Philadelphia household of Benjamin Chew in 1760. Chew was a successful lawyer who would become Pennsylvania's attorney general and chief justice of the court of appeals. (Chew's country estate, Cliveden, became the focal point of the 1777 Battle of Germantown.) Allen and his parents and siblings were household slaves of the Chews, responsible for cleaning, cooking and looking after the family's five children. When Richard was 7, he and his entire family were sold to a Delaware farmer named Stokeley Sturgis. While he was lucky in that his family was kept intact, he now had to endure the arduous life of a field hand. In recalling his masters at a later period in life, he called them "kind" but said slavery was a "bitter pill." The pill became more bitter after Sturgis sold Richard's mother and three siblings. Allen, 17 at the time, would never see these family members again.

Welcome to the homepage of Small and Rural Churches United (S.A.R.C.U.) This organization is
a support group for small and rural churches of the A.M.E Church. We are not an official organ of the A.M.E denomination but an conduit for encouragement and sharing of information. This month we are featuring the picture of Sara Allen the wife of our founder Bishop Richard Allen. For in reality she was the most influential supporter of the first churches which were small and rural churches in our denomination. In 1827 she formed the organization DAUGHTERS OF THE CONFERENCE during the first annual conference in our denomination. She was deeply moved by the worn out appearance of the clothes on the first clergy at that annual conference. She was also concerned about their physical and emotional well being, it was out of that concern that the DAUGHTERS OF THE CONFERENCE was born. This was a unique organization for it mended the clothes of clergy and provided food and financial support. Sara Allen was a tireless worker for God and provided much strength and support for her husband Bishop Richard Allen. She is a key figure to the success of the A.M.E Church. From the very beginnings of our denomination connectionalism took a priority. It is in our A.M.E nature to help one another by sharing resources and offering encouragement. Scripture tells us to lift one another up with encouragement.

The Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church was founded by the Reverend Richard Allen in 1787. It is the oldest African Methodist Episcopal church established by African Americans in the United States. It is located in Philadelphia. The Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church was also an important Underground Railroad stop. The Christian Recorder The Christian Recorder was the official newspaper of the Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church. The newspaper published articles for its members about the Underground Railroad, the abolition of slavery and religion. One of the things that gave Southern slaves hope was that attitudes in the North started changing early about slavery. Early Northern slave owners sometimes freed, or emancipated, their slaves. On the facing page is an article from the Christian Recorder about emancipated slaves. Use of this site signifies your agreement to the Terms of Service updated February 1998.
