Attoh Ahuma was a ghanaian churchman, a journalist and a celebrated nationalist campaigner. Originally his name was Samuel R. B. Solomon, born on 22 December 1963, son of the Reverend James Solomon of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. After going to school at the Wesleyan elementary school and high school in Cape Coast and then at Richmond College in the same town, he was ordained a minister in 1888.
In the 1890s Reverend Solomon became a celebrated journalist and a nationalist campaigner. He edited the Gold Coast Methodist Times and used it to protest against British rule. In 1897 the newspaper headed the campaign against the Lands Bill and Reverend Solomon helped found the Aborigines Rights Protection Society (ARPS) to protest against the bill. After an article entitled "Colony or Protectorate: Which?" the Wesleyan Mission authorities, upset at Reverend Solomon's political activism, removed him from the ministry that same year. The Methodist Times collapsed when he ceased to be editor.

AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL ZION CHURCH . The Texas Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, an offshoot of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, qv was organized in 1883. Zion missionaries had entered the South with the Union army and had been slower than the parent AME Church to move into Texas. The first conference meeting, in Stoneham, produced plans to organize the Zion congregations in the state and promote discipline among them. Bishop Thomas H. Lomax presided. The Zion AME Church numbered 6,927 after organization in 1890. However, in 1936 the census showed only 614 members in the state. In 1986-87 there were seven active churches, 1,752 confirmed members, and 2,095 total adherents in Texas. Evangelical theology, spiritual and material support for its members, and worship services that are also social occasions characterize the church. Through journals such as the Star of Zion , members have been kept informed. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Alwyn Barr, Black Texans: A History of Negroes in Texas, 1528-1971 (Austin: Jenkins, 1973). Olin W. Nail, ed.

African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church Black Methodist church in the United States, organized in 1821; it adopted its present name in 1848. It developed from a congregation formed by a group of blacks who in 1796 left the John Street Methodist Church in New York City because of discrimination. They built their first church (Zion) in 1800 and were served for many years by white ministers of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1821 a conference attended by representatives of six black churches and presided over by a white Methodist minister elected a black bishop, James Varick.
After the American Civil War the church grew rapidly in the North and the South. Foreign-mission programs were established in South America, Africa, and the West Indies.
The church is Methodist in doctrine and church government; a general conference is held every four years. It has about 1,200,000 members.

The Black Church has historically been a source of hope and strength for the African American community. In 1990, the late professor, C. Eric. Lincoln co-authored, The Black Church in the African American Experience with Lawrence H. Mamiya. They described the, "seven major historic black denominations: the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church; the African Methodist Episcopal Zion (AMEZ) Church; the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church; the National Baptist Convention, USA., Incorporated (NBC); the National Baptist Convention of America, Unincorporated (NBCA); the Progressive National Baptist Convention (PNBC); and the Church of God in Christ (COGIC)," as comprising "the black Church." Yet it is known that blacks were also members of predominantly white denominations such as the Episcopal, Presbyterian, Congregational, United Methodist and Roman Catholic churches. However, Lincoln and Mamiya chose to confine 'the black Church,' to "those independent, historic, and totally black controlled denominations, which were founded after the Free African Society of 1787 and which constituted the core of black Christians."
