Pan-Methodist group moves toward spiritual unity Nov. 25, 2002 News media contact: Linda Green Nashville, Tenn. NOTE: A sidebar, UMNS story # , is available with this report. By Edna Steinman* LOS ANGELES (UMNS) – Members of a pan-Methodist commission, meeting Nov. 19-21, agreed on the need to improve visibility and cooperation among their four denominations. Adopting a vision statement of "One body . . . many members," the 2-year-old Commission on Pan-Methodist Cooperation and Union signaled its interest in moving toward spiritual unity among churches in the African Methodist Episcopal, African Methodist Episcopal Zion, Christian Methodist Episcopal and United Methodist traditions. The four denominations represent more than 12 million members and share a common Methodist heritage. The new chairman, United Methodist Bishop Fritz Mutti of the Kansas Area, said his goal for the coming year would be to keep the movement progressing toward more cooperation and union through its relationships with Jesus Christ. He said he sees no interest in achieving unity through merger but rather in developing unity through a spiritual movement, a theological commitment within "our common heritage in the Wesleyan tradition." The commission was born through the merger of two separate commissions on pan-Methodist cooperation and union. It has spelled out its goals in its mission statement: "As members of the family of Methodism, we are called to move toward union by redefining and strengthening our relationship in Jesus Christ." The 36-member group works to foster meaningful cooperation among the four denominations in evangelism, missions, publications, social concerns and higher education.

History and facts about The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church October 12, 2002 The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, established in 1796, historically was dubbed the "freedom church" for its role in the abolition movement. The denomination owns Harriet Tubman's house in Auburn, N.Y. Tubman was a leader in the Underground Railroad movement and was known as "The Moses of Her People." Since 1953, the church has built a library and an assembly hall on the 26-acre site. The Underground Railroad, which started before the Civil War, was a network that helped black slaves flee to the North and gain their freedom. Free black Northerners, as well as white abolitionists, were among those assisting runaways who found refuge in woods, swamps, caves, homes, schools, barns and churches - including Friends (Quakers) and A.M.E. The Rev. Dr. Vincent Jones, presiding elder of the Knoxville/Maryville District, said Craigs Chapel's recent placement on the Tennessee Historic Register and the National Register of Historic Places fits into a vision the A.M.E. Zion denomination has for highlighting its contributions to the Underground Railroad. To subscribe to The Knoxville News Sentinel (home delivery)

    Life in the 1880's
The African Methodist Episcopal, African Methodist Episcopal, Zion and the Christian Methodist Episcopal Churches in Indiana Sheryl D. Vanderstel The first of the three main black Methodist denominations began in Philadelphia with Rev. Richard Allen. Born into slavery and converted to Methodism at the age of 17, Allen almost immediately knew he was called to preach. His owner allowed Richard and his brother to join a Methodist class meeting, led by Delaware farmer John Gray. Allen's owner was so taken by Allen's sincerity that he next allowed interracial religious gathering on his property. Finally, converted to Methodism himself, Allen's owner arranged for the Allen brother to buy their freedom. When Allen won his legal victory he issued an invitation to other black ME congregations to assemble in convention. There were sixteen representatives at the convention in Philadelphia, representing churches in Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland, which joined together to form the African Methodist Episcopal Church in April 1816. They immediately elected Richard Allen as their first bishop. The group determined to adhere to traditional Methodism and adopted a Discipline almost identical to the ME Discipline. The Methodist church had a system of licensed elders, deacons, lay ministers and exhorters to assist in the local church work. This system was adopted not only by the AME but also later by the AME Zion and CME denominations. The bishop headed the church body, which was divided into conferences; each led by a bishop. Each conference then was subdivided into districts. Within a district there could be several circuits. A presiding elder directed the work of the conference. Ordained deacons were the senior circuit riders or local congregational ministers.

Mount Zion Cemetery, adjacent to the church, contains more than 200 graves. While most of these graves are unmarked, the oldest marker is from 1861.
Photograph from National Register collection By the end of the Revolutionary War, many Quakers and anti-slavery sympathizers had set aside land for freed slaves. African-American hamlets were established in secluded areas on portions of Quaker land throughout western New Jersey. Small Gloucester, also known as Dutchtown, emerged in the early 19th century as one of these African-American settlements. One well-known Underground Railroad route was the Greenwich Line that began in the hamlet of Springtown , led 25 miles north to Small Gloucester, and continued north to Mount Holly, Burlington and Jersey City, New Jersey. The communities along this route were ideal stations on the Underground Railroad as they were situated about 20 miles apart, surrounded by Quaker land which was often swampy or dense woods, and inhabited by many free African-Americans. For more than 10 years, Harriet Tubman helped operate this line.
