Agnostisism The word agnost means `not knowing'. An agnost is someone saying that he does not know, and is usually used in the context of knowledge about God, or the nature of reality. Agnosticism is the believe that it is impossible to know certain things for sure. There are different reasons for which one does not know, and for this reason we make a differnence between weak and strong agnostism. Weak agnosticism A weak agnost simple claims that he does not know whether God exists. This means that he does not exclude the possibility of knowing whether God exists. Strong agnosticism Strong agnoticism claims that it is impossible to know whether God exists. Somehow this is very strong claim, as it requires knowledge about reality to know this for sure. For this reason, some people hold the position that strong agnosticism is self-defeating. Then he read a eulogy to Darrow by Emanuel Haldeman-Julius, who had published several books by the noted lawyer, that follows: Clarence Darrow Clarence Darrow, 80-year-old lawyer, Agnostic, liberal, defender of the "underdog" and fighter for civil rights, died on March 13, 1938. He had lived a full, useful, constructive life. As a speaker, he moved tens of thousands to an appreciation of Freethought and humanism. As a writer, especially in his numerous little volumes which I published during the past 20 years, Darrow reached even a larger audience with his messages of enlightenment and realistic evaluations of supernaturalism. For two decades, Darrow was a warm friend of my establishment, pouring his writings and speeches into my presses and always refusing to accept a dollar in payment for his contributions. GOOD SOIL by Kenneth Ambrose Priebe Luke 8:11-15 says, "The seed is the word of God. Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop." To me that verse is probably one of the truest and most personal that I have yet read, because my story is a good example of it. The truth of Christ faded in and out of my life in different shades and colors until I finally got planted in some good soil. I was born and raised in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, and was brought up in the United Methodist Church.

He was elected to the British parliament six times, and each time that body refused to seat him because he was an Atheist and because he would not swear his allegiance to queen and country, so help him ``God.'' Everyone in England knew Bradlaugh and his fight, and he raised the issue of Atheism to every person in public life as he sought allies. Nonetheless, I hope to show that agnosticism can be so formulated that it is no less philosophically respectable than theism and atheism. This is not a mere philosophical exercise; for, as it happens, the formulated position is I think the one to which I subscribe. I include a qualification here since it may be that the position to which I subscribe is better characterised as fallibilist atheism but more of that anon. I begin by distinguishing between two different kinds of agnosticism. The Case for Agnosticism When engaging in philosphical discussions, especially about the existence of God, agnostics are usually met with much indignation from both the theistic and atheistic sides of the issue. The former usually accuses an agnostic of knowing the "truth," but ignoring it. The latter usually says agnostics are scared of retribution from society, but are atheists at heart. J. Blackham. It dealt primarily with intimations of agnosticism among skeptical philosophers before 1869, when Thomas Henry Huxley invented the term as a label for his personal approach to religious and philosophical questions.
